Job Description

Tree Pittsburgh seeks an experienced, enthusiastic, highly motivated individual to develop, enhance, and implement programming to foster and grow community partnerships.

This full-time position serves a member of the ReLeaf team, engaging internal and external stakeholders and ensuring that education and outreach outcomes promote Tree Pittsburgh’s mission.

They will motivate and direct stakeholders to Tree Pittsburgh’s programming, support outreach initiatives, respond to community inquiries and resident questions, and more.

This individual should have two or more years of professional and/or volunteer experience in community and stakeholder engagements, preferably in the environmental field.

The Community Outreach Coordinator position is funded through a special grant to the Pittsburgh Canopy Alliance from the USDA Forest Service Biden-Harris Administration’s Inflation Reduction Act.

General Summary/Objective: 

Under the supervision of the Tree Equity Manager, the Community Outreach Coordinator (COC)develops, enhances, and implements community-driven programming to foster and grow community partnerships. They serve as a member of the ReLeaf Team, engaging both internal and external stakeholders, and ensuring educational and outreach outcomes promote Tree Pittsburgh’s mission of restoring, enhancing, and protecting the tree canopy in Allegheny County, particularly in low-canopy, justice seeking communities. The incumbent is an experienced, enthusiastic, highly motivated individual that is dedicated to improving the urban natural environment and thrives in working with diverse communities.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Motivate and direct stakeholders to Tree Pittsburgh’s programming including ReLeaf planning meetings and community surveys, tree plantings, educational classes, and volunteer opportunities.
  • Assist in creating and collaborating on outreach materials for constituents.
  • Support outreach initiatives including community canvassing through door-knocking, attending community meetings, leveraging and cultivating relationships with key community leaders, and increasing Tree Pittsburgh’s visibility within targeted communities.
  • Field and respond to community inquiries and resident questions in a friendly and timely manner.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to guide and inform programming opportunities in low canopied and historically marginalized areas of Allegheny County related to urban forestry.
  • Maintain, improve, and analyze data about tree canopy, programs, and constituents to aid in data-driven decision making as well as to contribute to funder reports.
  • Maintain sound relationships with municipal officials, community organizations, as well as other public and private stakeholders and participants of Tree Pittsburgh’s programs.
  • Partner with key internal and external stakeholders to ensure service excellence and operational effectiveness in Tree Pittsburgh’s grants, programs, events, and activities.
  • Assist in setting programmatic and organizational strategies aimed at engaging communities with low canopy coverage to increase tree planting and care.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Expectations and Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of professional and/or volunteer experience in community and stakeholder engagement, preferably in the environmental field
  • Ability to obtain a valid driver’s license within the first six months and clean driving record
  • A passion for and commitment to community greening and Tree Pittsburgh’s mission
  • An understanding of equitable engagement, racial equity, and community partnership best practices
  • A strong desire to actively engage historically marginalized populations in designing solutions to community issues
  • Experience making data-driven decisions and understanding the importance of data management including the use of systems like ArcGIS or similar platforms
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to keep calm and composed under pressure, especially during events
  • Self-motivated and takes initiative – self-sufficiency in time management is key
  • Organizational skills, attention to detail, and multitasking ability
  • Ability to present materials in multiple format settings and various audience sizes
  • Must be flexible to work evenings, weekends, and extended hours when needed
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workplace

Preferred Experience/Knowledge/Skills:

  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse groups in the environmental or related field
  • Experience working in Allegheny County in the environmental and/or social services fields

Schedule/Travel:

This is a full-time position. “Typical” work hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, with some evenings and weekends. Work location is primarily Tree Pittsburgh’s office, with travel across Allegheny County and occasional opportunities to work from home.

Compensation/Benefits:

This is a full-time salary position starting at $47,500. Tree Pittsburgh offers health, dental, and vision benefits, paid birthday and paid time off, a 3% retirement match, and other benefits. Terms and conditions of employment are as per the Tree Pittsburgh Employee Handbook and an Offer Letter.
