Job Description

Communications intern 

Salary: £16.28/hr (including holiday pay) 

Duration of internship: 3 months 

Deadline: Wednesday 17th July at 23:30 

Interviews: w/c 22nd July 

Location: Hybrid, minimum two days in the office (South Kensington) per week with the option for more 

Start date: August onwards

Imperial College London is thrilled to be looking for a communication intern. You will support the work of Imperial College London’s Communications Division in promoting the university through news, websites, publications, and social media. The internships can be tailored to your interests in the wide field of communications, and we provide a mentor as well as a line manager to help you take the next steps in your career. 

The internships are designed to provide opportunity for people who are traditionally under-represented in communications, including but not limited to: minority ethnic, disability, neurodiversity, low socio-economic status, refugees, and prison leavers.

The position will be managed by one staff member from the Communications Division, but you will have the opportunity to work across all six communications teams: 

 

Strategic Media team 

  • Writing news articles on staff and student innovation, community engagement and outreach, and other inspiring stories from the community 
  • Managing media enquiries relating to our corporate, strategic and education activities 
  • Evaluating the success of our media work 
  • Supervising film crews on campus 

 

Research Media team 

  • Writing research news stories and news in brief articles 
  • Assisting the Academic Health Science Centre Communications Manager with project work 

 

Internal Communications team 

  • Writing community-focused news content for Imperial’s news site and features platform 
  • Helping plan and evaluate newsletters 

 

Social Media team 

  • Writing and scheduling social media posts for Imperial campaigns, news and feature stories 
  • Creating rich content for social media e.g. video, Stories 
  • Hosting and organising social media takeovers e.g. Instagram, TikTok 

 

Digital team 

  • Reviewing College web pages and suggesting improvements on content design 
  • Researching best practice on university website design 
  • Assisting with web editor tasks and content updates 
  • Helping see in the new website redesign 

 

Design and Editorial team 

  • Copywriting, editing and proofreading content for university publications including Imperial magazine, the Annual Report and the Graduation programme 
  • Shadowing or assisting Graphic Designers with producing publications, assets and signage 
  • Assisting with picture research for Imperial publications and assisting shoots if required 

 

Requirements 

Candidates/post holders will be expected to demonstrate the following: 

  • Proficiency in written English 
  • Excellent standards of accuracy, consistency and attention to detail 
  • Ability to prioritise tasks 
  • Well organised, self-motivated and able to work well independently and as part of a tightly knit team 
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines 
  • Ability to manage sensitive material and maintain a professional demeanour
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Interest in higher education, science and research
  • Awareness of the UK media and/or political landscape
  • Interest in digital and social media applications
