Job Description

POSITION TITLE: Communications Director
STATUS: Full Time, Exempt – 40 hours per week, Open to telecommuters based in the St. Louis metro area.
REPORTS TO: Vice President of Strategy and Communications
SALARY RANGE: $65k-$70k
POSITION SUMMARY
Under the general supervision of the Vice President of Strategy and Communications, the Communications Director will lead day-to-day execution of Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri’s external facing communications work. This individual will manage the department’s earned media and digital media footprints in partnership with the marketing and brand team, PPSLRSWMO’s paid media team, and advocacy team. The Communications Director must be a strategic thinker, quick writer, and able to meet hard deadlines while managing relationships with media stakeholders and collaborating deeply with internal stakeholders including cross-departmental teams.
The Strategy and Communications team is responsible for setting a strategic public narrative that promotes the work of protecting and expanding access to sexual and reproductive health care. This department holds a 360 lens on external facing communications work, which impacts the organization’s ability to provide patient-centered health care and advocate for all people’s rights and freedoms to control their own bodies, lives, and futures.
QUALIFICATIONS:
•3-5 years in campaign style communications and/or public relations work.
•Proficiency in AP Style writing
•Ability to build and execute 360 communications plans
•Ability to work some nights and weekends
•Ability to do limited travel to all health center locations within PPSLRSWMO’s regions
•Ability to manage a budget
•Effective public speaking skills; such as serving as a spokesperson, conducting media trainings, and giving other presentations
This position works closely with senior management and with all other departments. Physical demands include sitting for extended periods of time at a computer, lifting up to 25 pounds, and effective verbal and visual communication skills and phone skills. This position will work both onsite and remotely. This candidate should be comfortable working a Monday-Friday schedule with occasional evening and weekend duties as required by the department. A bilingual candidate proficient in English and Spanish is highly preferred.
PRIMARY DUTIES PERFORMED
•Write and copyedit communications assets including, but not limited to, talking points, press releases, op-eds, and other external facing materials.
•Maintain strong national and local media stakeholder relationships.
•Collaborate and coordinate with coalition partners.
•Prep, train, and staff affiliate spokespeople and patient storytellers.
•Pitch and place earned media.
•Ensure all external facing materials including marketing, digital, and other assets consistently reflect PPSLRSWMO’s tone and voice.
•Create and execute 360 communications campaigns that reflect organizing opportunities, earned media narratives, and support policy and operational goals.
•Track and monitor relevant media clips and mentions using the agency’s media monitoring tools

Establishes and complies with Planned Parenthood organizational policies that:
•Ensure the provision of the highest quality and most professional service deliver to all Planned Parenthood clients
•Protects Planned Parenthood assets from liability
•Ensures the physical safety of Planned Parenthood clients, staff and volunteers
•Protects confidentiality of all Planned Parenthood clients, donors, Board and all areas of operations
•Follow HIPAA privacy and security guidelines
