Queens Botanical Garden is an urban oasis where people, plants and cultures are
celebrated through inspiring gardens, innovative educational programs
and demonstrations of environmental stewardship.

Queens Botanical Garden (QBG) is a private non-profit cultural institution located on 39 acres of New York City public land in Flushing, New York. Last year (FY18), the Garden served approximately 250,676 visitors, including 32,000 schoolchildren, and 48,215 through outreach efforts offsite. A recently completed visitor survey reveals that 45% of visitors speak a language other than English at home. This fact underscores the importance of the mission and the challenges and opportunities QBG faces daily in creating programs, exhibits and landscapes that serve the needs of people who live in and visit one of the most ethnically diverse counties in the nation. The Garden has committed itself to addressing the complex and everchanging needs of its diverse community and to being the place where people, plants and cultures meet.

About the Communications Coordinator

Reporting to the Marketing Manager, the Communications Coordinator will help support QBG’s in-house Marketing team with the goal to achieve QBG’s visitation and revenue goals. This position will work with all departments to promote the Garden’s mission in print and digital media, and in person at onsite and offsite locations. The Coordinator will be responsible for graphic design projects, communications with and outreach to partner organizations, social media platforms, online presence, and more. This position may supervise interns and volunteers.

Responsibilities Include:

• Designing digital and print marketing collateral to promote programs and events following the Garden’s graphics standards. Materials include banners, postcards, brochures, flyers, etc.
• Facilitating day-to-day website updates through content management platform such as WordPress
• Publishing listings of QBG events and programs
• Assisting in outreach and follow-up correspondence with media to secure coverage
• Updating content for the website, e-blasts, bi-weekly e-newsletters, and more
• Curating and posting content on social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.
• Monitoring general news and social media and creating reports on media coverage and social media activity
• Coordinating with partners and organizations to establish ongoing cross-promotions
• Providing support for the general operations of the Marketing Department, including press conferences, meetings, media correspondence, photography, etc.
• Supporting public events and programs by designing and installing signage, interfacing with the public, and more
• Fielding media inquiries and requests for media assets and information
• Representing the Garden at offsite events in the community
• Conducting research projects and administrative tasks such as updating email databases, recordkeeping, digital archiving, etc.
• Being involved with institution-wide initiatives as appropriate

Minimum Qualifications:

• Associate’s degree or two years of college and/or experience in Communications, Marketing, Advertising, Graphic Design, or related field
• Two years of related professional experience required
• Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Bridge, etc.)
• Excellent writing, communication, organizational and “people” skills
• Ease with technology and aptitude in word processing, spreadsheets, and database programs, including Microsoft Office, CMS, and Constant Contact
• WordPress and HTML knowledge preferred
• Photography skills a plus
• Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects at a time
• Availability to staff select evening and weekend events
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Willingness to “hit the ground running,” tackling projects with a proactive and hands-on manner
• Openness to growing and learning in the field of communications and the missions of non-profits
• A driver’s license is helpful

This position is part-time, 28 hours per week.
