Job Description:
The School Resource Officer (SRO) for The Collegiate High School at Northwest Florida State College (CHS) is directly accountable to the Chief of Police/Executive Director – Campus Safety & Security for the following duties and responsibilities:
- Fulfill all duties of a school resource officer (or school safety officer) as established by Florida law and applicable regulations.
- Patrol designated CHS buildings during CHS hours Monday through Friday.
- Patrol designated CHS events during or after CHS hours, as needed.
- Serve on CHS teams or committees as required by Florida law and applicable regulations, and as needed, at CHS administrators’ request.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of safety requirements and protocols in high school and post-secondary environments.
- Complete all required and recommended training for SROs and seek continuous professional development.
- Participate in development of, maintenance of, and training on CHS emergency response plans and other safety protocols.
- Be a safety resource to CHS administrators, faculty, staff, students, and parents.
- Be a positive, constructive influence on the CHS and broader College environment, clearly communicating with CHS administrators, College administrators, faculty, staff, students, and parents.
- Exercise professional judgment and discretion regarding what is a safety issue versus what is a disciplinary or other CHS administrative function.
- Build rapport with CHS administrators, faculty, staff, and students.
- Competently, proactively provide resolution/intervention between students regarding safety concerns.
- Consult with school administrators regarding safety issues at CHS, on the Niceville Campus, or in the community as it affects CHS students.
- Abide by the Oath of Office and Code of Ethics.
- Enforce federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies.
- Ensure timely communication with dispatch and supervisors.
- Lock and unlock doors.
- Report observed safety concerns and hazards.
- Provide escort services on campus, as needed.
- Provide written reports on investigations, complaints, security incidents, etc.
- Collect, prepare, and document evidence for completing reports and testifying in court.
- Perform all other applicable administrative or other law enforcement duties as assigned.
- Complete annual mandatory training, as a part of the College’s risk management tool.
- Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:
- High school diploma with valid certification from accredited Police/Criminal Justice Program plus one (1) to four (4) years relevant experience.
- Completion of a Florida Approved Law Enforcement Basic Recruit Training program.
- Passing score on the Florida State Officer Certification Exam.
- Knowledge of current principles and practices of law enforcement.
- Pass background investigation, physical examination, and drug testing.
- Possess a valid Florida Driver’s License.
- Law enforcement field experience preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Background working in schools or with children preferred.
- High school diploma required, Associate’s degree preferred.
