Role summary
UNIC is a highly successful joint educational partnership between Kaplan International Pathways and the University of Nottingham and is currently in its 7th year of operation, based in the University Science Park, right next to Nottingham’s University Park campus. We are looking for a leader who can build on this success and drive the College in the next phase of its development.
As College Director at UNIC you will be responsible for the leadership and direction of the College. Your focus will be to ensure that the College delivers an exceptional educational experience to each student – from the quality of the teaching through to the standard of facilities, to the high level of customer service and care from all staff in the college and the successful progression to the University of Nottingham.
Key to this role is maintaining and developing the relationship with the University as well as other key bodies such as UKVI and OFS. It will also be important to maximise the benefits of being located in a city with two Kaplan Colleges (NTIC is our pathway College in partnership with Nottingham Trent University) and an accommodation residence, linking closely with the NTIC College Director and wider teams.
The successful candidate must have an ability to lead a team with fairness and inclusivity, whilst demonstrating a commitment to having a diverse, high-performing team.
Main responsibilities and functions
Reporting to the Regional Director of Colleges, you will have responsibility for:
- Ensuring that every student is safe and well throughout their time at the College, and given the very best chance of success and progressing to their chosen degree at the University of Nottingham.
- Leading the College’s Academic and College Services teams, with direct line management responsibility for a number of senior staff members
- Managing and developing the performance and day to day operations of the College to ensure effective and efficient delivery of all teaching, student support and associated services
- Management and development of the relationship with the University of Nottingham
- Management of the College financials to ensure targets are met and forecasts produced in line with agreed timelines and annual budgets
- Ensuring all quality assurance systems are properly implemented within the College, complying with Kaplan Academic Rules and Regulations and quality assurance systems
- Ensuring Kaplan International Pathways Safeguarding, Health and Safety and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Policy and procedures are implemented and developed within the College
- Ensuring that the College is compliant with all UKVI and Office for Students regulations and that all staff are trained on this area and that compliance reports are produced as appropriate
- Oversight of the annual College monitoring, review and strategic planning processes
- Contributing to the development, implementation, monitoring and review of the Kaplan Strategic Plan for Pathways
- Contributing to the UK Pathways College Executive Management Board and to specific Pathway-wide developments and projects as appropriate
- Representing Kaplan on appropriate committees and boards within Kaplan and externally
- Any other duties as required from time to time by the Regional Director of Colleges and other senior members of management.
Person description
To be considered for the role, you will need:
- Extensive experience of leading academic and support teams in the education sector
- Knowledge of the needs of international students
- A demonstrable commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion and widening participation agendas
- A strong and demonstrable commitment to student and customer-centred delivery
- Excellent relationship management, organisational, interpersonal and communication skills
- Strong leadership and management skills, with a willingness and ability to lead inclusively
- Experience in managing resources and budgets and good financial planning skills
- Excellent teamworking skills, both as a leader and as a member of different teams
- A commitment to, and proven track record of, improving and enhancing performance of teams and operations
- Undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification
- A postgraduate degree or equivalent qualification would be desirable
Location: This role will be based at University of Nottingham International College, based in the Nottingham Science Park just across the road from the University Park campus of the University of Nottingham.
Remuneration and benefits
The role will attract a base salary from £70k per annum, plus an annual bonus, based on company and individual objectives.

Selection process
The selection process will consist of a number of steps.
- Initial interviews will be held in May on Zoom.
- For successful candidates, a second round on-site in Nottingham will be held, with a series of tasks and a chance to meet staff and students.
- Then for the preferred candidate(s), there will be a final stage involving the Kaplan Pathways managing director and senior colleague from the University of Nottingham.
