Clinical Specialist, Pharmacy / Pharmacist Educator – Pharmacogenetics, Division of Clinical Pharmacology & Toxicology

A Pharmacist Educator in the pharmacogenetics program is responsible for developing and delivering educational programs, training, and resources to pharmacists, healthcare professionals, and students to enhance their understanding of how genetic variations impact drug responses and patient care.

This role is essential for promoting and supporting the precision child health initiative at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids).

Key Responsibilities:

Curriculum Development and conduction: Create and update educational materials, courses, and resources related to pharmacogenetics for pharmacists and other health care professionals and ensuring that they align with the latest research and best practices. Conduct educational sessions, workshops, and seminars for pharmacists, pharmacy students, and healthcare professionals to enhance their knowledge of pharmacogenetics and its clinical application.

Creation of a pharmacogenetics residency program at SickKids: Create and design a pharmacogenetics residency program and ensure that the program meets and follows educational and accreditation standards.

Research and Content Expertise: Stay updated with the latest developments in pharmacogenetics and its relevance in medication management. Be prepared to answer questions, provide guidance, and offer insights on related topics.

Support and Consultation: Assist the pharmacogenetics team in writing and returning pharmacogenetic results to patients and their health care team.

Promotion and Advocacy: Promote the integration of pharmacogenetics into pharmacy practice and healthcare settings, advocating for its importance in delivering personalized medicine.

Mentoring: Provide mentorship to pharmacy students and professionals interested in specializing in pharmacogenetics.

Qualifications:

  • Pharmacist Licensure: Must be a licensed pharmacist.
  • Advanced Degree preferred: A Pharm.D. or MSc is preferred, but not required.
  • Experience: Significant experience as a pharmacist is required (5+ years of pharmacy experience). Prior teaching or training experience is an asset.
  • Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of pharmacogenetics principles, genetic testing, drug interactions, and their clinical applications needs to be acquired.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal.
  • Adaptability: Ability to stay updated with the rapidly evolving field of pharmacogenetics and translate complex concepts into understandable terms.
  • Collaboration: Strong teamwork and collaboration skills to work with diverse healthcare professionals and institutions.
  • Attention to Detail: Ensure accuracy and precision in educational materials and content.
  • Demonstrated commitment and actions in advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion objectives
