Primary Purpose:

The Climate Adaptation & Resilience Specialist coordinates Fire Science and Climate Adaptation (FSCA) climate change focused initiatives in support of SDG&E’s near and long-term climate and sustainability goals. Works in collaboration with other departments, with management review, to develop SDG&E’s Vulnerability Assessment, a 4+ year ongoing system-wide asset level climate hazard vulnerability assessment. Facilitates climate advisory group meetings. Coordinates and reports on progress of the Community Engagement Plan, a multifaceted outreach and education plan. Works cross-functionally with other departments to coordinate company-wide information and reporting, as part of SDG&E’s climate-forward focused strategy.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Climate Change Adaptation Regulatory Requirements – Coordinate and implement all climate change related compliance activities. Work with various SDG&E stakeholders to consolidate data on climate change vulnerabilities, initiatives and potential opportunities in support of SDG&E’s Vulnerability Assessment. Coordinate Community Engagement Plans. Facilitate SDG&E Climate Change Team meetings, which is a CPUC mandated effort with required annual reporting on activities and progress. Provide close coordination with stakeholders across regulatory affairs, electric distribution engineering, electric operations, substation planning, enterprise risk, procurement, gas operations, customer service, customer programs, environmental, wildfire mitigation, and numerous other departments including Southern California Gas Company to assess system vulnerabilities. Provide recommendations to management. Track and report climate initiatives budgetary spend.
  • Climate Change Adaptation Enterprise Risk Liaison – As this is a new initiative, will develop knowledge and expertise to serve as a Fire Science Climate Change (FSCA) Adaptation subject matter expert on the continuous development of risk drivers, risk consequences, and/or risk mitigations that are clearly associated with enterprise risks across organization. Develop FSCA related materials, for management review, to be included in Risk Assessment Mitigation Phase and General Rate Case filings.
  • SDG&E Sustainability Strategy – Support ongoing development and implementation of Climate Change Adaptation components of SDG&E sustainability strategy. Develop annual CPUC progress report through advice letter articulating SDG&E’s progress towards community engagement plans and general climate change strategy integration across company. Initiate and post GIS maps to support climate adaptation and evolving Company needs.
  • SDG&E Climate Change Adaptation Academic and Community Partnerships – Lead and expand academic and community partnerships associated with Climate Change Adaptation as the primary SDG&E Liaison.
  • Perform other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree Climate Science, Earth Systems, related discipline and/or equivalent training and/or experience.
  • 2 years – Professional experience in a climate//environmental-focused or closely related role.
  • 1 year – Utility-focused work or energy and utility related experience is required.
  • Familiar with Climate data resources and ability to obtain highly technical supporting research.
  • Written and oral communication skills required to support professional work products and presentations to senior leadership.
  • Solid understanding of climate hazards and climate change mitigation strategies.
  • Ability to independently prioritize and multi-task under strict deadlines with competing priorities.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office suite of applications.
  • Must reside in Southern California or be willing to relocate upon hire.
  • We offer a hybrid work environment. Although the schedule may vary, typically this will allow you to work from the office two to three days per week and work remotely on the remaining workdays.

Other Qualifications:

  • May travel on occasion for industry conferences or panel discussions (2-4 per year).
  • Must be available for 24 hour response duties during wildfire season as this position supports climate resilience activities such as community resource centers.
  • Must be able to respond after-hours, weekends, and holidays for Community Resource Center activations or other Emergency Activation needs.
