Children’s Garden Instructor (Summer)

Queens Botanical Garden is an urban oasis where people, plants and cultures are celebrated through inspiring gardens, innovative educational programs, and demonstrations of environmental stewardship.

About This Opportunity

The Children’s Garden is a fun and exciting place where kids spend time planting, playing, observing, learning, and building community in a nurturing environment. Summer in the Children’s Garden incorporates the garden as a resource to support nature discovery, planting and harvesting, explorations in local and cultural foodways, artmaking, and science investigations. Our program is committed to nourishing community, creativity, curiosity, and social and environmental awareness for young people ages 5 – 12. The Children’s Garden is a learning garden, designed for young people to follow the wonder, make and learn from their mistakes, and to find a sense of safety and belonging.

Young gardeners develop skills in planting, maintaining, and harvesting vegetables, herbs, and flowers in an outdoor learning environment. Youth also learn skills in composting, supporting wildlife, and creating change as it relates to environmental and food justice.

The Garden seeks a dedicated and experienced Instructor to engage audiences in our Children’s Garden program, Tuesday through Friday from June 28th through August 19th.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate programming activities to the standards set by QBG.
  • Facilitate and contribute unique expertise/voice to curriculum that is engaging, fun, and meaningful for young gardeners to help build strong community in the garden.
  • Setup and breakdown of each day’s materials including tool cleanup, garden bed upkeep, and general outdoor classroom setup.
  • Attending and contributing to team meetings and curriculum development.
  • Regular updates/check-ins with the program coordinator.
  • Working with/supporting junior councilors, interns and volunteers who will support your group.

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in education, environmental studies, or related field or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience teaching elementary-age programs, with an emphasis on nature-based and social-emotional learning, food justice, culturally-responsive curriculum.
  • Trauma-Informed/restorative justice approach to conflict.
  • Experience working with neuro-diverse young people with autism and ADHD a plus.
  • Knowledgeable or interested in organic small-scale vegetable gardening and food and environmental justice.
  • Must be able to work independently or as part of a group.
  • Be comfortable outside in various weather conditions and prepared with proper attire.
  • Committed to being present and punctual on all workdays.

Schedule

We are currently seeking educators for one or all of our sessions. Educators must commit to Training and at least one Program Session. Instructors who are available for multiple/all sessions will be given priority. Please indicate which sessions/dates you are interested in in your cover letter.

Summer Training Days | Tuesday, June 28th – Friday July 1: 10 – 4 PM

Program Days | begins Tuesday, July 5th – Friday, August 19th, 8:30 am – 4 pm

  • Session I: Flavors of Home, July 5 – 15
  • Session II: Gardens for Wildlife, July 19 – July 29
  • Session III: Art in the Garden, August 2 –12
  • Session IV: A Place to Grow, August 16 – 19

This is a part-time seasonal position.  Compensation starting at $18/hour and is commensurate with experience.
