Full-Time Chief Human Resources Officer
Job Description
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is looking for an experienced Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) to build and expand on current HR capabilities while driving a strong employee-focused culture. The ideal candidate will be an enterprise-wide, collaborative, and strategic leader enabling a servant leadership culture that supports a high functioning, progressive HR department responsible for the services, systems and processes that NREL staff need to achieve the laboratory’s mission.
Job Location
The CHRO position is based in Golden, Colorado. NREL has approximately 2,700 employees and is a rapidly growing national laboratory specializing in renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development. Reporting and Relationships Structure
As part of NREL’s executive leadership team reporting directly to the Laboratory Director, the CHRO partners with senior leaders in creating and driving the lab-wide people strategy as well as operations and resource planning for optimizing organizational effectiveness and performance. This position coordinates closely with DOE representatives, managing expectations and communicating information to DOE and NREL stakeholders, including the Alliance Board of Directors and the Alliance Human Resource Compensation Committee with a goal of building a highly efficient and effective workforce.
Reporting to the CHRO is the HR Operations Director who is responsible for Compliance; Total Rewards (compensation, benefits, and absence management); Information Systems and People Services; and People Mobility (immigration, research and exchange services, and relocation). Other direct reports include Talent Acquisition and Organizational Development managers and Senior Human Resource Business Partners.

Principle Duties & Responsibilities
- Leads staff in delivering comprehensive HR services, tools, policies, and procedures in alignment with NREL strategy and mission.
- Supports HR management in driving total rewards programs, executive compensation, recruiting, employee relations, staff development, education and training, talent management, EEO and affirmative action, and employee communications.
- Provides resources and tools for leadership to assess and plan around performance and potential.
- Drives the employee experience, supporting organizational design and workforce analytics for decision making and implementing a framework for the full talent lifecycle.
- Designs and evaluates career paths, overseeing all HR functions and crafting strategies that meet the laboratory’s business goals.
- Demonstrates progressive management values and standards, supporting the development of and providing a sense of shared direction and purpose for HR staff.

- Preserves a lab-wide culture of trust, transparency, safety, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Develops and mentors HR leadership to ensure healthy team dynamics, and strong collaboration and teamwork.
Strategy & Vision Responsibilities
- Develops and implements HR strategies that align with NREL’s overall mission and vision.
- Drives innovative best practices and policies that service the full range of NREL’s people strategy and help build and sustain a high-performing equitable and inclusive culture of learning, accountability, transparency and collaboration.
- Provides strategic guidance on HR initiatives, analytics and reporting, talent reviews, training, change management, organizational design, diversity and inclusion, and safeguarding prevention-related efforts.
- Partners with NREL’s Diveristy Officer and DE&I liasion to support NREL’s mission of inclusion and diversity.
