Chief Finance & Operations Officer
As the Chief Finance & Operations Officer (CFOO) at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA), this pivotal leadership role encompasses the strategic oversight and comprehensive management of Finance, Operations, People & Culture (Human Resources), Facilities and Technology. Central to this position is the establishment of a robust partnership with the CEO, rooted in mutual trust and a shared vision, making the CFOO an integral and influential voice on the leadership team. The CFOO is instrumental in building strong effective relationships with staff, Board members and specifically with the Finance and Audit Committees. This role involves directing, administering, and coordinating organizational activities, aligning policies, goals and objectives set forth in conjunction with the CEO and Board and consistently enhancing the financial acumen of the organization’s staff.
The salary range for this role is $200,00 – $250,000, dependent on experience.
Responsibilities
General Organizational Oversight
- Establishes and ensures the execution of operating policies consistent with institutional objectives; reviews all operating procedures and internal systems for efficiency and effective support of the organization’s needs.
- Conducts ongoing overall assessment of organization’s staff by evaluating competency, productivity and performance; identifying structural and/or capacity gaps or obstacles to growth; and implementing appropriate strengthening processes and solutions.
- Participates in critical strategic planning and decision-making and ensures that organization activities and operations are carried out in compliance with local, state and federal regulations and laws governing business operations.
Board of Directors
- Acts as a primary liaison to YBCA’s Board of Directors (Board), along with CEO and Chief of Staff.
- Works closely with the CEO and Board Chair to set the Board’s annual plan and meeting schedule.
- Oversees Board meeting agendas and advances reading materials and meeting minutes for the Board and committee meetings.
- Presents financial reports.
Operational and Strategic Planning
- Leads the annual operational planning process, aligning to multi-year strategic goals and financial plans.
- In partnership with the CEO, oversees the structure and processes necessary to manage the organization’s current activities and projected growth.
- In partnership with the Finance & Planning Analyst, leads the planning and preparation of short-term and long-range financial plans and budgets to support strategic business goals; forecasts and manages operating and capital activity against budget; and compares actual performance to budget and interpret results.
- Establishes processes to set revenue goals and forecasts, budgeting expenses, and cost standards.
- Ensures that YBCA has robust multi-year financial plans and capital budgets.
Financial Management
- Supervises YBCA’s Controller; ensures the integrity of YBCA’s day-to-day accounting processes, procedures, and preparation of financial statements and information returns, ensures that statements apply generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) for nonprofit organizations.
- Coordinates the management of YBCA assets with organizational policies, Finance Committee directives and investment managers to assure compliance with policies; and promotes strategic management of cash flow and organizational assets.
- With the Controller, regularly assesses the overall financial functions, ensuring that the accounting, bookkeeping, audit, general ledger, bank reconciliations and taxes are organized and accurate.
- In partnership with the Controller, oversees the implementation of the annual audit and ensures that the organization is in legal compliance as it relates to accounting, finance, donors, grants, etc.
- Ensures compliance with all federal, state and local laws and regulations, as well as GAAP and non-profit financial accounting standards.
- Works with insurance brokers to develop appropriate levels of insurance related to YBCA activity and advises staff on processes and procedures to mitigate risk.
- Supports the Board’s Finance and Audit Committees, ensuring timely and accurate reporting to the Board on all financial matters.
Human Resources
- Oversees the Human Resources department ensuring that HR systems and structures support YBCA’s mission, vision, values and goals.
- Promotes staff development through performance reviews and goal setting.
Technology
- Oversees the Technology department ensuring an organization-wide approach to information technology systems and innovative and strategic solutions for changing needs and times.
Facilities
- Oversees the Facilities Department, ensuring professional, cost effective operation of the physical facility in support of YBCA programs, including building and equipment maintenance, security, safety programs, building systems, and new construction projects.
- Provides for the development and management of a plan to maintain the physical structure and buildings as well as the equipment, furniture, machines, etc.
- Guides the creation of an ongoing maintenance plan for the building, including the determination of renovation priorities, given the realities of budget constraints and on-going facility restoration.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in business, Finance or Accounting. MBA and/or CPA strongly preferred.
- At least 10 years’ experience in senior management (or in an operational leadership level position) of nonprofit organizations with a minimum $10M annual budget.
- At least 7 years’ experience with financial management and budget development/oversight; significant experience in, or knowledge of, cash management and nonprofit accounting, including fund and grant accounting, compliance and reporting.
- Thrives in a highly collaborative environment that values diversity, equity, inclusion, and access, and works effectively with people of varied backgrounds, experiences, points of view, and aspirations.
- Experience in overseeing capital projects.
- Knowledge of operations, financial systems and internal control methodology.
- Demonstrated abilities in strategic planning, budgeting and financial reporting.
- Proficiency in managing technological resources and information systems.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including demonstrated ability to effectively present in group settings.
- Ability to effectively manage internal teams and departments – as well as relationships with Boards, financial institutions, independent auditors and key business partners.
- Senior level planning capacity, particularly as it relates to the development of integrated programmatic, financial and information systems required to support a multi-layered organization.

Compensation and Benefits
The salary for this position is between $200,00 – $250,000 based on full-time hours, and includes a competitive benefits package.
