Full-Time Chief Counsel
Job Description
Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) seeks a passionate and creative attorney to lead our legal team, help us secure our democracy and build a better Washington. As a leading nonpartisan nonprofit government watchdog, CREW is dedicated to defending our democratic institutions, rooting out government corruption and fighting the influence of money in politics through legal action and communications grounded by in-depth research. Responsibilities:
- Direct and oversee all of CREW’s legal actions, including litigation, administrative and legal complaints, and open records requests.
- Develop innovative and creative approaches for CREW’s legal and litigation strategy, and take the lead on brainstorming and evaluating new lawsuits and actions.
- Supervise a diverse and seasoned legal team, consisting of in-house attorneys, a paralegal, interns, fellows and outside counsel.
- Develop and execute new legal approaches to fostering a more equitable ethical democracy.
- Engage in depth in legal and policy analysis.
- Help develop policies for the organization to advocate at the federal and state levels to advance CREW’s mission.
- Work with the senior management team to help determine organizational strategy and management approaches.
- Significant editing and writing responsibilities.
A great candidate has:
- J.D. (required).
- A minimum of 10 years legal experience.
- An interest in ethics, money in politics, government transparency and equity in democracy.
- Litigation experience, potentially including Freedom of Information Act, campaign finance, or administrative law litigation.
- Outstanding communication and editing skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and managerial skills and sound judgment.
- Proven track record of effectively interacting with senior management.
- Ability to work strategically and collaboratively across departments.
- Interest and experience in mentorship and leadership development.
- Interest and experience in promoting diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace.
- The position is based in Washington, D.C. but may begin remotely due to the ongoing pandemic.

Salary is commensurate with experience.
