Full-Time Chief Building Official
Job Description
Location: Oshkosh, WI

Salary: We offer excellent benefits, with the anticipated starting salary for this position ranging $72,364 – $82,702, depending on qualifications.
The Chief Building Official is responsible for managing all office functions as well as providing project consultation, state and local code enforcement, and seeking new Inspection Division efficiencies.
The work of this position requires the exercise of technical knowledge, considerate judgement and interpretation, professional oversight for decisions on code compliance and best management practices for design and construction.
Specific duties include:
- Review, observe, and evaluate inspectors’ performance.
- Review work assignments, collaborate with and assign duties to inspection staff as required.
- Provide administrative oversight of the Weights and Measures program and the contracted architect who reviews commercial building plans.
- Supervise the work of Code Enforcement and the enforcement process.
- Prepare the annual division budget.
- Advise architects, engineers, contractors and the general public on code requirements, code interpretations and code compliance.
- Collaborate with and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, builders, citizens and City employees and officials.
- Review, inspect, and enforce compliance with City and state codes.
- Identify efficiencies to implement lean processes into the Inspection Division functions and work with other City departments to identify solutions to improve the development process in Oshkosh.
Required minimum qualifications:
- Associate’s Degree in building design, civil or structural engineering, construction management, construction trades, or a related field.
- Five years of experience in building construction and inspection, including at least two years of inspection supervision and code enforcement.
- Experience in commercial building plan reviews.
- UDC Building, HVAC, Electrical and Plumbing Certifications required within 12 months of hire; Commercial Building Inspection Certifications preferred.
- Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
The ideal candidate will possess knowledge of building construction methods and materials, and building and zoning codes. They will also be able to effectively interact and communicate with diverse audiences, to act in a professional manner with tact, good judgement, and possess discretion and the ability to communicate effectively under stressful conditions with individuals or groups who may be skeptical, argumentative, or disagreeable.
