About the Bard Early Colleges

Bard Early Colleges are founded on the belief that many high school–age students are eager and ready for the intellectual challenges of a college education. Bard Early Colleges act on this belief by providing younger scholars with a tuition-free, credit-bearing college course of study in the liberal arts and sciences following the 9th and 10th grades. Students are taught by college faculty and have the opportunity to earn up to 60 college credits and an associate in arts (A.A.) degree from Bard College, concurrently with a high school diploma. Bard Early Colleges begin preparing students for college work as early as the 9th grade and offer ongoing guidance and academic support.

Now in its third decade, the Bard Early College network serves over 3,000 students in campuses in The Bronx, Lower Manhattan, Queens, and Hudson, New York; Newark, New Jersey; New Orleans, Louisiana; Cleveland, Ohio; Washington, D.C.; and Baltimore, Maryland. Since 2003, Bard College has awarded more than 3,000 A.A. degrees to its early college students.

Bard High School Early College (BHSEC), a partnership between Bard College and the NYC Department of Education (NYCDOE), seeks a full-time long-term Chemistry Laboratory Technician to support its high school and college chemistry curriculum during the NYC public school academic year. 

Position Duties 

The primary responsibilities in this position will be ordering material, preparation, set-up, and supervision of teaching laboratories in chemistry. This includes preparing and distributing reagents and standardized solutions, and distributing and testing equipment. In addition, the Chemistry Lab Technician will supervise students during laboratory experiments. The Technician will be responsible for cleaning and maintaining the teaching laboratory and laboratory prep room, cleaning glassware, maintaining an accurate chemical inventory, and maintenance of equipment including an FT-IR, a rotary evaporator, pH meters, and a water purification system. 

The successful candidate will possess a B.A. or B.S. in Chemistry and have knowledge of proper laboratory techniques and safety procedures, including the use of analytical balances, volumetric glassware, and organic solvents. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well with faculty and students, as well as strong organizational skills and attention to detail are required.

Location: Bard High School Early College (BHSEC) Queens, 30-20 Thomson Ave., Long Island City, Queens, NY

Start Date: October or November 2023 

Duration: Full-time ongoing

Compensation: $45,000 to $55,000

Qualifications

  • Successful candidates will possess a B.A. or B.S. in Chemistry
  • They will have knowledge of proper laboratory techniques and safety procedures, including the use of analytical balances, volumetric glassware, and organic solvents.
  • They will have strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well with faculty and students
  • They will also possess strong organizational skills and have attention to detail
