Your opportunity at a glance
The WSLCB Enforcement and Education Division is announcing an exciting opportunity for a Chemist 3 position in Olympia, WA. This position acts as liaison between WSLCB cannabis producers and processors, and other state agencies on non-licensing, financial, and enforcement issues.
The position acts as a subject matter expert in certain aspects of the cannabis industry and I-502 regulatory structure, acting as a resource on understanding cannabis production and specified compliance requirements under the rule, including traceability reporting, medical compliant products, quality assurance testing, package and labeling, record keeping, security requirements, allowable pesticides, soil amendments, fertilizers, other crop production aids, and destruction of waste. The position also acts as the subject matter expert for the reporting system and conducts data analysis and forensics to assist with research, financial analysis, and enforcement.
The position will support ongoing work and partnerships with other state agencies.

Duties
Some of your primary duties will include:
- Demonstrating and maintaining specialist knowledge of the cannabis industry and compliance requirements under rules for such things as quality control testing and lab result reporting, packaging and labeling, record keeping, cannabis production, and processing methods, medical compliant products, allowable pesticides, soil amendments, destruction of waste, high-risk products, allowable hydrocarbons, and other solvents, and professional grade closed looped extraction systems.
- Demonstrating and maintaining a solid foundation in chemistry, sampling practices, and the ability to incorporate emerging research and study on cannabis testing methods, testing instrumentation, and all applicable laws and rules.
- Demonstrating and maintaining specialty knowledge related to the Cannabis plant specialty area of testing and the hundreds of unique compounds, including flavonoids and cannabinoids. More than 2000 compounds are produced by pyrolysis during the smoking of Cannabis, and they are represented by different classes of chemicals including nitrogenous compounds, amino acids, hydrocarbons, sugar, terpenes, and simple fatty acids.
- Demonstrating and maintaining specialist knowledge of the unique pharmacological and toxicological properties of Cannabis.
- Demonstrating and maintaining specialist knowledge on all compounds and isomers outlined above and in applicable Washington State RCW and WAC as well as the chemistry of phyto cannabinoids, endocannabinoids, and synthetic cannabinoids. Other natural constituents of the Cannabis plant, to include terpenes and terpenoids, polyphenolics, alkaloids, waxes and triglycerides, and important toxic contaminants.
- Analyzing new legislation and WAC to determine rule requirement impacts on all aspects of the cannabis industry. Actively participate in rule writing and revision where needed.
- Developing training curriculum, and educational documents, and delivering presentations to cannabis producers, processors, and retailers on laboratory and product testing standards, extraction methods, and other general requirements.
- Conducting collaborative work with other state agencies specified compliance requirements on applicable areas above.
- Ensure data generated under the Pesticide Data Program (PDP) model of standard operating procedures (SOP) documents are appropriate and of high enough quality to support the intended WSLCB, Department of Health (DOH), Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA), or other established regulatory uses.
- Act as one of WSLCB’s designees to the Interagency Cooperative Team and participate as an active member of the laboratory standards team.
- Work together on laboratory standard issues in order to ensure a coordinated and consistent statewide approach to cannabis testing and shall work with other state and federal agencies (where possible and appropriate) to support the continued improvement of the regulatory structure for cannabis testing.
- Provide, as appropriate, technical and administrative support to cannabis testing laboratories on issues pertaining to cannabis testing and standards.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Eight (8) years of experience performing chemical analysis in an analytical laboratory AND 30 Semester hours or 45 quarter hours of college-level chemistry.
OR
A Associate’s degree with a major in Chemistry or a Associate’s degree with a minimum of 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of college level chemistry AND six (6) years of experience performing chemical analysis in an analytical laboratory.
OR
A Bachelor’s degree with a major in Chemistry or a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of college level chemistry AND four (4) years of experience performing chemical analysis in an analytical laboratory.
OR
Two (2) years of experience as a Chemist 2.
NOTE: A Master’s degree will substitute for two years of the required experience, or a Ph.D. degree will substitute for three years of the required experience provided a bachelor’s degree and the required college-level chemistry have been achieved
