Film Reference Library
The Film Reference Library (FRL) is dedicated to preserving Canadian cinema heritage and promoting cinema scholarship by collecting, preserving, and providing access to a comprehensive collection of reference resources, as well as film and archival materials. The Library is free, open to the public, and a popular destination for movie lovers, filmmakers, students, researchers, screenwriters, and film and television professionals.
Reporting to the Collections and Services Manager, the Cataloguing Assistant will contribute to key archival and collection maintenance projects through database management, cataloguing and data-entry tasks, and creation of Finding Aids. The Ideal candidate has relevant skills in cataloguing archival materials and best practices in handling archival materials.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in processing archival acquisitions, creating Finding Aids and inventory lists, and creating new records in MIMSY XG Collections Management database.
- Assist Collections Manager in tracking and processing archival donations.
- Assist in registering new acquisitions into collections management database.
- Create new records and cataloguing metadata for 35mm film materials.
- Process and catalogue various Special Collections, under direction of supervisor and fulfilling goals of the department.
- Data-entry and maintenance/quality control of records in MIMSY XG database.
- Support operational and administrative tasks in the Film Reference Library space, including shifting and organizing collections and materials in storage spaces.
- Assist Collections Manager in creating FRL pop-up displays at TIFF Bell Lightbox.
- Other collection maintenance tasks and duties as assigned.
CONTRACT DATES:
- February 28, 2022 – March 10, 2023
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- 1+ years experience working in a library and archives environment
- Completion of a Masters degree, Diploma, or equivalent in Collections Management, MLIS; or, currently completing a relevant Collections Management/MLIS professional programme
- Experience in cataloguing archival materials, best practices in handling archival objects, database management and data-entry, creation of Finding Aids
- Knowledgeable in Canadian film and media history an asset, with a preference for a candidate with a demonstrated cultural competency in one or multiple areas of Indigenous, Black, South Asian, East Asian, LGBTQ+ film and media
- Demonstrated experience in providing high quality public services
- Previous experience in a schedule-driven, project-based environment with emphasis on timelines
- Previous experience supervising volunteers an asset
- Adaptable to a flexible work schedule, which may include evenings, weekends, or remote work
