Internship Carbon Neutrality Assessor
Job Description
The Utah Conservation Corps (UCC) seeks to set attainable goals for carbon neutrality, create a plan to achieve those goals, and provide public engagement around carbon footprints. We are seeking an individual placement to support our efforts, assist with carbon accounting, and share information with the public and our partners. This position will be filled as an AmeriCorps position serving between 900 and 1,700 service hours between 12/31/22-12/30/23. The position will report to UCC’s Operations & Logistics Coordinator and the AmeriCorps Coordinator.
Responsibility 1
Assess the carbon footprint of UCC
- Identify all current sources of carbon emissions
- Account for total carbon emissions from 2020-2022
- Estimate carbon sinks
- Develop a carbon database to track progress toward carbon neutrality
Responsibility 2
Provide recommendations to assist UCC in achieving carbon neutrality
- Explore and propose methods to reduce carbon emissions
- Research and recommend creation of new carbon sinks and expansion of current carbon sinks
- Assess feasibility for creation of e-bike field crew
- Make recommendations and prepare paperwork for USU Green Office Certification
- Advise and assist with other sustainability and ESG projects within UCC
Responsibility 3
Track data and prepare reports
- Create a comprehensive final report including recommendations to guide UCC toward carbon neutrality goals
- Engage with the public by providing information and creating educational materials on carbon footprinting and reduction of carbon emissions
- Assist with data for grant and fundraising requests
Qualifications
- Knowledge of carbon accounting and/or sustainability reporting
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to prioritize, organize, and manage shifting workloads
- Ability to conduct research, analyze information, and draw conclusions
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite or Google products
- Familiarity with frameworks such as Greenhouse Gas Protocol, GRI, or CDP is desirable
The AmeriCorps program requires that members:
- Be a United States citizen, U.S. national, or a lawful permanent resident alien of the United States
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Have a high school diploma or GED or work towards obtaining one while in the program
- Must undergo and pass a criminal history check
- Are eligible to serve an AmeriCorps term of service
Compensation and Hours Required:
This position requires the fulfillment of 900, 1,200, or 1,700 hours of service over a 12-month period. Utah Conservation Corps (AmeriCorps) members receive the following benefits:
1,700 Hour Members
- $30,200 annual living allowance
- Allowance is paid in even disbursements throughout the year-long term of service
- $6,345.00 AmeriCorps Education Award
- Child-care and insurance benefits
1,200 Hour Candidates
- $21,318 annual living allowance
- $4,441.50 AmeriCorps Education Award
900 Hour Candidates
- $15,988 annual living allowance
- $3,172.50 AmeriCorps Education Award
Living allowance is paid in even disbursements throughout the term of service. Education awards are available to members after successful service term.
Please note that AmeriCorps rules limit members to a maximum of four AmeriCorps terms in a program such as UCC.
AmeriCorps also limits the number of education awards an individual may earn. This rule states that “although an individual can serve more than two terms, a person cannot earn more than the aggregate value of two, full-time education awards.” It is a requirement to obtain a high school diploma or GED before one is eligible to use the Education Award.
