Access Now is a growing international human rights organization dedicated to defending and extending the digital rights of users at risk around the world, including issues of privacy, security, freedom of expression, and transparency. Our policy, advocacy, technology, and operations teams have staff presences in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East/North Africa (MENA), North America, and South/Southeast Asia, to provide global support to our mission.

About this role

The Campaigner – US passionately defends human rights in our increasingly digital world, taking Access Now’s regional and organization-wide campaigns to a new level of size and impact on a global stage. The Campaigner – US leverages the opportunity to strengthen the impact of Access Now’s campaigns, community engagement initiatives, and media outreach at local, regional, and global levels.  The Campaigner – US demonstrates leadership and creativity as an advocate and movement-builder.

The Campaigner – US sits within the Advocacy Arm on the Policy and International Programs Team, and focuses primarily on US-based project work. The role reports through the Advocacy Manager – US. The Campaigner works closely with the Organization’s various Advocacy teams.

What you will do

  • Identify opportunities for impact, developing campaign strategies to capture, manage, and coordinate actions to address human rights concerns for individuals and communities across the region
  • Produce engaging and dynamic content for a range of audiences through articles, op-eds, speeches, campaign materials, press releases, blog posts, social media, and multimedia content
  • Help manage and sustain the growing relevant campaign communities and spaces, including updating of relevant information
  • Coordinate in-depth rapid-response publications for regional portfolios or thematic issues, as applicable, to report on digital rights threats as they develop and to deliver resources to affected communities
  • Identify opportunities for norm-setting and policy development at all levels
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners, and expand our reach beyond the digital rights community, developing communities of action to impact decision makers, building an intersectional partner network, and connecting directly with the at-risk individuals we aim to serve, as well as media and other key stakeholders who can help advance our advocacy goals
  • Host or coordinate online and offline convenings around geographies and issues
  • Work across the Organization to run and build campaigns in a sustainable and scalable manner, stewarding resources available for translation, design, and additional project-based support
  • Work with tech and telecommunications companies, governments and other stakeholders to raise awareness and hold them accountable to their actions
  • Research fundraising and partnership opportunities, including innovative collaboration
  • Work closely with colleagues to map strategic growth and opportunities for deepening our work in support of communities at serious risk throughout the region, and in response to regional developments that impact the global digital rights landscape
  • Coordinate work with colleagues across Teams, setting clear advocacy plans and priorities, monitoring progress, and proactively communicating as conditions change
  • Assist in global implementation of the annual RightsCon summit series
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Skills, education, and mindset you will bring

  • Proven experience in building and managing U.S. campaigns and coalitions, and movement building (communication, campaigning, advocacy, public relations, journalism) and in outreach positions (campaigner, strategist, lobbyist, community manager, ambassador of fun, etc), with progressively increasing levels of responsibility
  • Proven experience working in the U.S. Congress and/or U.S. agency or lobbying the U.S. Congress and/or U.S. agency
  • A demonstrable knowledge of relevant international human rights and technology policy issues and experience in advocacy, journalism, communications, campaigning, or organizing, with the ability to apply this capacity towards complex and concurrent goals
  • A proven capacity to synthesize complex information in fluid and rapidly changing contexts, and the ability to design solution sets to achieve meaningful change
  • Knowledge of policy and advocacy environment in the region, and on thematic issues of greatest relevance
  • Excellent spoken, expository, and persuasive writing and editing skills
  • Cultural sensitivity and the ability to communicate with a wide range of people from around the world
  • Ability to lead and grow campaigns to ensure maximum impact, and the instinctive knack for identifying and developing the strategies and partnerships needed
  • Technical understanding of internet infrastructure, security, and censorship circumvention
  • Fundraising experience, writing and securing grants from foundations or public institutions
  • Ability to travel internationally and domestically on occasion
  • Fluency in English required; fluency in other language(s) relevant to the region or issue is desirable
  • Appropriate education and work preparation for the role, with bachelor or master degree equivalent in human rights, communications, journalism, law, or similar

The Details

Location

This is a full-time position, ideally based in or around Washington, DC. We will also consider qualified applicants in the New York City Region, or another remote location within the US. The successful candidate must possess the right to work in the location in which they will be based. We are unable to sponsor visas or relocations for this role. Most Access Now Team Members are working through hybrid office arrangements, combining remote at-home work with intermittent use of offices (e.g. NYC) and/or co-working spaces.

Remuneration

Access Now offers competitive compensation – in line with skills, preparation, and depth of experience – and benefits packages that align with our regional and office presences. While skills, experience, and the specific region/location drive compensation, anticipated, initial placement within the salary range for this role is between $5,800 and $6,600 USD gross monthly.
