Location: Los Angeles, CA (Remote) – Some travel in Los Angeles County, CA & US

Position Status: Full-Time; Exempt Employee

Salary Range: $65,000-$75,000

POSITION OVERVIEW

The GreenLatinos California Community Advocate, Los Angeles (“Advocate”) will launch GreenLatinos Urban Greening Initiative in Los Angeles, California, convene our members, grow the resources for and capacity of our frontline members, while advocating for our policy priorities. 

 

The GreenLatinos California Community Advocate, Los Angeles will convene our members from across sectors of the movement to build relationships, partnerships, and collaborations that help to break down historical barriers between sectors and more efficiently share the unique resources (financial, information, access) that each of us have. The Advocate will support the significant work already being done in our communities by our current and future members, by identifying, developing, and directing resources to help them grow their programs and make them more sustainable.

The Advocate must be a well-organized individual who has experience working with diverse constituencies (communities of color, local justice organizations, businesses, government, foundations, and allied green groups), working in coalition with grassroots and national environmental organizations, and advocating for and implementing fair and equitable partnership practices with these communities. 

The Advocate will report directly to the Chief of Staff. 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Member Services, Organizing & Partner Capacity-Building 50%:

  • Convene urban green groups, GreenLatinos members, and Latino/a/e environmental, conservation, and climate justice leaders to advance a collective urban greening agenda
  • Assist with the creation of a Los Angeles Urban Greening Advisory Board, the development of the grant parameters, and the development of a process for inviting, accepting, and selecting grant proposals to our Justicia y Equidad Fund for community-led groups in Los Angeles working on urban greening initiatives 
  • Coordinate GreenLatinos members to organize community actions such as community education materials, community trainings, local elected meetings, and advocacy efforts, including online/virtually
  • Serve as lead on receiving, assessing, and following up on member requests from California
  • Provide consistent state and national legislative updates to California GL members that provide opportunities for member engagement in the legislative process

 

Policy 15%:

  • Coordinate urban greening grantees and advocates to attend two federal advocacy fly-ins with opportunities to connect with members of Congress and top Administration officials on urban greening policy and funding priorities 
  • Determine and execute regionally-specific public support in advocacy, including but not limited to: signing on to public letters, authorizing GreenLatinos endorsement of legislation, participating as official parties to regulatory proceedings, and track such actions through appropriate channels
  • Joining and engaging with coalitions that GreenLatinos is or should be a part of. Identify actions for GreenLatinos to take and work to execute

 

Events 15%:

  • Assist in the planning and execution of virtual and in-person GreenLatinos events throughout California and support on national events
  • Provide GreenLatinos California members opportunities for in-person/ virtual meetings with elected and appointed officials on priority issues identified by membership
  • This position may require some travel within California and the United States if it is safe to do so

 

Communications 10%:

  • Develop English/Spanish content in collaboration with our communications team including press statements, website content, social media content, graphics, blog posts, op-eds, etc. to be disseminated to GreenLatinos members, partners, and the general public on issues relevant to GreenLatinos California and national priorities.
  • Lead the creation of policy education materials including fact sheets, infographics, legislative updates related to the California portfolio of issues.
  • Serve as a media spokesperson for GreenLatinos on California issues.
  • Produce press releases and statements for GreenLatinos California priorities. 

 

Program Management 10%:

  • Work with GreenLatinos staff to develop a strategy and work plan for GreenLatinos California which may include the development of grant proposals and criteria, submission process, outreach, budget execution, grants management, and reporting for grantees
  • Assist the CEO, Development team, and other GreenLatinos staff with funder relationships, updates, grant development, grant management, and reporting related to the GL California program
  • Manage project expenditures within the allocated budget and ensure required resources are allocated for project delivery and implementation


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & TRAITS

  • Commitment to GreenLatinos mission
  • Bachelor’s degree and/or a minimum of three years relevant work experience with community engagement, organizing, stakeholder facilitation, policy or advocacy settings working on environmental justice issues or other social and racial justice issues
  • Understanding of state and local political and advocacy process
  • Experience with organizing, grant management, programming, communications 
  • Experience working effectively within diverse communities including Spanish speaking communities 
  • Experience working effectively on environmental and climate justice issues
  • Dedication to equity, diversity, inclusion, and justice and centering frontline communities
  • Ability to communicate effectively and concisely via writing and verbally
  • Must be able to provide your own personal computer and mobile phone for work (financial assistance can be requested where needed)

 

NICE TO HAVE

  • Spanish speaking and writing capabilities
  • Preference for those who have experience working in City of Los Angeles and California state advocacy and organizing settings

 

COMPENSATION

The annual salary range for this role is $65,000-$75,000 and is dependent on experience. GreenLatinos also offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes 100% employer paid Dental, Health & Vision benefits, retirement plan with employer contribution (up to 6% match), all federal holidays off, up to 4 weeks of paid vacation per year and up to 4 weeks of sick and family leave, on an as needed basis.
