We’re a diverse and inclusive workplace that strives toward justice and equity, and celebrates innovation and experimentation. We bring our design and development expertise to a wide range of industries and offer a variety of opportunities in the web and mobile space.

Business Development Specialist – Placement Services at Detroit Labs

The Business Development Specialist on Placement Services focuses on growing our OnSite team through building partnerships with organizations looking to scale up their in-house technical teams. In this role, you will actively seek out new OnSite opportunities, while continuing to strengthen existing client relationships. The Business Development Specialist takes point on all aspects of growing the business, including regularly engaging in outbound and inbound leads, and strategizing with our internal project teams.

The Business Development Specialist reports to the Director of Business Development and will work collaboratively with all the members of the Business Development team, along with members of the Talent Specialist team and Marketing team.

Average Day of a Business Development Specialist on Placement Services

Your day at Detroit Labs begins with a brief check-in with your Business Development team to share new developments, ask questions, discuss opportunities, and collaborate to remove anything that prevents us from getting work done. After connecting with your team, you’ll spend time on new relationship development and networking. You will be responding to new messages from your network, conducting client research and cold outreach. You will also check in with your existing client teams, get updates on any growth opportunities, project challenges and successes, and touch base with your client contacts. You will collaborate with your Business Development peers and other senior team members across the organization on creating and responding to any active pitches and contribute to marketing and ongoing outreach campaigns.

In your first month, you will be onboarded into the organization with the help of a mentor. You will have the opportunity to shadow other team members in different areas of the business so that you have the opportunity to experience the fullest range of live sales activities possible. You will be able to sit in on many types of calls and client meetings. You will work with our marketing team to understand their relationship to our sales functions and observe our sales engineering activities to understand what goes into creating estimates and proposals for our projects. You will go through our internal sales training process to ensure alignment on expectations on how we qualify opportunities, handle objections, and spend our time effectively. You will also begin to learn our tools and technologies, such as LinkedIn Sales Navigator, HubSpot, and other CRM and tracking systems.

In your second month, you will begin performing your own independent market research tasks, looking for industries that have demand for our services, clients in those industries, and starting to develop plans for contacting these clients. You will take an upfront role in some of the calls and meetings you shadowed the previous month, developing skills and confidence with our processes and sales philosophy. You will work with your mentor to begin to develop your personal strategy for communicating Detroit Labs’ value proposition to clients.

In your third month and beyond, you will develop the core fundamental understanding of the Detroit Labs sales approach. You will take an active role in responding to our inbound leads. You will develop a deeper understanding of our project teams, and how those teams create the projects you will sell, in order to have deeper and more strategic conversations with clients about how to solve their problems. You will lead sales calls, run your first project demo with a potential client, and build new client relationships. You will own deliverables like proposal creations and candidate submissions for placement to our clients. You will begin to operate independently, identifying opportunities, developing your plan to approach those opportunities, and implementing that plan. Your earlier relationship-building activities will transition to active relationship management, and your outreach and research activities will become a consistent loop of new, active, and cold relationships and contacts.
