Job Description
- Supervise and work directly with Bridge Maintenance crews consisting of 5-7 field staff and an Office Assistant in the maintenance, preservation, rehabilitation and replacement of NCDOT-owned and maintained structures.
- Ensure a safe and well-maintained infrastructure at the specified service levels.
- Inspect, scope, assess, plan, schedule, and order materials.
- Perform work and document work and materials used during these operations.
- Apply quality construction and maintenance techniques, practices, and materials.
- Manage the assigned Bridge Maintenance office, facility and equipment.
- Maintain the bridge maintenance facility and equipment.
- Reconcile invoices.
- Oversee contractors’ work and inspections.
- Support area Roadway Maintenance offices.
- Apply and develop techniques to safely, effectively, and efficiently implement maintenance and repairs.
- Conduct preservation and rehab projects.
- Perform administrative duties involving staff.
- Perform a variety of work activities including overseeing our bridge maintenance program for the assigned area, planning and scheduling bridge maintenance activities and documenting all work to maintain compliance with the FHWA on NBIS structures.
- Physically support the bridge crew in the performing their daily duties by performing the same job duties as the assigned field staff assigned to the respective bridge crew or as directed.
- Experience interpreting construction plans and performing basic math calculations.
- Project management experience directing, assisting, and training bridge crew members and operators.
- Demonstrated ability to identify and address quality of work performance improvement issues.
- Computer skills to perform job duties including creating daily job reports, managing inventory, maintaining annual staff reviews, and receiving/sending daily job assignments to staff.
- Organizational experience planning and organizing work.
- A high level of practical and conceptual understanding of bridge maintenance, preservation, and rehabilitation activities of structures and large pipe and culverts.
- General building maintenance knowledge and the ability to effectively implement this knowledge in the field with limited oversite.
- Capable of making emergency decisions and implementing these decisions that are consistent with good engineering and safety practices.
- Aptitude and personality to effectively supervise and work with supporting office and field staff.
- Ability to schedule work, develop materials, staff, equipment, and time estimates.
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
- Open to taking direction and providing/receiving supervisor feedback.
- Ability to maintain detailed documents of daily activities with thorough notes of sequence of work, pictures and sketches so that the work can be documented in our WIGENS database.
- Multi-craft and trade skill sets or knowledge that can be demonstrated. i.e., rough and finish carpentry, plumbing, concrete placing and finishing, metal work and welding.
- Directly related knowledge and experience in Bridge Maintenance.
- Capable of reading, writing, and performing basic math including decimals, fractions, multiplication, division, basic algebra, and trigonometry.
- Ability to read, understand, and interpret measuring devices, i.e., tape measures and grade rods with accuracy and speed.
- Computer skills in Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, & Excel), WIGENS, MMS, BMS, & SAP.
- Ability to interpret structure, erosion control, roadway plans and contracts, standard specifications and drawing and implement in the field.
- Ability to work directly and closely with Bridge Maintenance Engineer to effectively and efficiently implement bridge maintenance activities including structure and roadway inspections.
- Demonstrated ability to train staff in all aspects of bridge maintenance activities.
- Advanced vocabulary of bridge, structures, and roadway elements and a journey-level understanding the function.
- Advanced-level skills in the performance of visual inspection and assessment of structures and equipment.
- Ability to read, interpret, and understand Bridge Safety Inspection reports and know how to interpret this information as it relates to bridge maintenance work and incorporation in field applications.
- Ability to reconcile materials and maintain material inventory.
- Availability to work extended hours as required and be available for emergency callbacks 24 hours per day/7 days a week.
- Commercial Driver’s License. (Note: If you don’t have one, it may be obtained through our on-the-job training within 360 days of hire).
- We require a pre-employment drug test and will conduct a background check with previous employers for the past 2 years for controlled substance/alcohol testing.
- Safety toes shoes are required within 30 days of employment.
- High School/GED diploma, and
- 7+ years of progressive experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
