Training location:
Members will begin their term at our main office in Boulder, CO. Corps Members will be responsible for travel to Boulder – members must arrive no later than May 22nd, after which ACE will provide all further transportation to and from the project site.
Work location(s):
Mount Sanitas and surrounding trails in Boulder, Colorado. Member housing is located outside of Boulder. Members are strongly encouraged to bring a personal vehicle for use on off-days.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Members receive a $560 bi-weekly living stipend
- 3 meals per day while on project (approximately 16 days/month)
- Free housing is provided in Boulder for the duration of the project, as well as use of a tent throughout your term
- Transportation to and from work sites
- Upon successful completion of a full term, AmeriCorps Members receive an Education Award of up to $2417.14 (for 675 hours/20 weeks)
Position Description:
This position is based out of Boulder, CO. From there, ACE will provide transportation to Boulder, Colorado, where members will spend the duration of their term. Applicants to this position will live and work with a crew of 6 people including 2 crew leaders. They will be responsible for improvement and maintenance of the Mount Sanitas and surrounding trails. Members will develop trail work skills in a rugged, mountainous environment.
ACE’s AmeriCorps Boulder Crew Member is a competitive position designed for motivated and high-achieving individuals seeking leadership opportunities in the conservation field. Members serve in professionally supervised teams as they explore future outdoor careers, learn practical field skills, and develop confidence as emerging leaders in the field of conservation. Previous AmeriCorps Members in this position have moved on to positions of seniority within ACE, regional and county parks, and the greater Conservation Corps industry. During their term, members will be pushed to develop technical conservation and leadership skills in the field in order to prepare them for potential future leadership roles. As such, an enthusiasm for the work and the ability to be a self-starter is required.
Schedule:
Corps Members typically work 10 hours per day for 4 consecutive days while camping in remote wilderness areas. Between work projects Corps Members will generally have 3 days off. However, applicants should expect the ACE project schedule to vary.
Responsibilities and Expectations:
Members can expect to work long days, and must successfully adapt to various climates and working conditions. Proper safety procedures must be observed in all tasks, including the repair and use of hand and power tools used on projects.
All ACE Members practice environmental ethics, and are expected to work in diverse team settings in taxing situations or circumstances. Members are expected to be flexible and complete all functions of the job, including tough physical labor and hiking several miles to remote locations under adverse weather conditions.
Qualifications:
- US Citizen or permanent resident
- Between the ages of 18 and 30; up to 35 with veteran status
- Willing to represent ACE and AmeriCorps in a professional, responsible, and enthusiastic manner
- ACE maintains a zero-tolerance policy for illegal drugs and underage drinking. Alcohol use is prohibited on ACE projects and on ACE property, and any evidence of drug use or violating ACE’s alcohol policy will result in immediate release from the program. ACE reserves the right to require drug testing.
