Job Description
The Innovative Methods in Paediatric Clinical Trials (IMPaCT) lab and the Child Health Evaluative Sciences (CHES) program at the Hospital for Sick Children are searching for a Biostatistician to join their team. The IMPaCT lab, led by Dr. Anna Heath, aims to improve the conception, design and conduct of clinical trials through the development of novel statistical methodology, software, expertise and guidance. The successful candidate in this role will develop novel trial designs in collaboration with experts for a range of studies investigating treatments in the paediatric emergency department, for children with neurodevelopmental disorders and for patients with respiratory failure receiving care in intensive care. The candidate will also undertake methodological projects to improve the use of novel statistical methods for trial design, particularly focusing on Bayesian adaptive trials and simulation-based trial design.

Here’s What You’ll Get to Do:
- Develop novel statistical trial designs to investigate key clinical questions from a Bayesian perspective.
- Undertake simulations to evaluate the characteristics of these novel trial designs.
- Use Bayesian methods to analyse clinical trial data across a range of disease areas for inclusion in presentations and publications.
- Create statistical analysis plans for ongoing clinical trials across a range of disease areas.
- Develop novel statistical methodology to improve the design of clinical trials using Bayesian methods and decision theory.
- Collaborate within multi-disciplinary research teams to explain and present key statistical concepts.
- Write manuscripts presenting novel statistical trial designs.
- Take a leadership role in the IMPaCT team.
- Contribute to the supervision of graduate students.
- Develop and maintain code repositories, primarily in the R language.
- Disseminate research through presentations, seminars and workshops.
- Partake in professional development through attendance at journal clubs and research rounds.
Here’s What You’ll Need
- A masters or PhD in statistics, biostatistics or related field AND at least 2 years relevant professional experience.
- Experience with Bayesian statistical methods and software.
- Statistical programming skills, ideally in R.
- Strong academic writing skills.
- A willingness to learn new concepts and gain research skills.
- Excellent technical communication skills and experience translating complex statistical concepts to non-specialists.
- Experience in, or a willingness to learn, leadership, mentoring and training.
- Ability to function independently and collaborate within a team.
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to multi-task.
