Full-Time Biological Science Laboratory Technician (Animal)
Job Description
The US Geological Survey, National Wildlife Health Center (NWHC) is seeking a team leader for our laboratory animal scientists and technicians. This position leads a team of staff committed to providing high standards of animal welfare for the captive animals used in wildlife disease studies. Our studies typically include non-domestic animals, such as birds, bats, snakes, wild rodents, and amphibians, but also some traditional laboratory animals. A main duty of this position will be to manage our animal services program, including coordinating studies, managing the budget, assigning daily tasks to the team and ensuring high quality care. Other primary activities include designing husbandry plans for various wildlife species and ensuring safe handling of animals potentially infected with human or animal pathogens (ABSL2 or ABSL3). Technical skills such as collection of samples from animals, examination of animals, and performing diagnostic tests such as cytology, fecal exams, hematology are highly desired. Certifications such as Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT), Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT), or similar are desirable, but analogous technical skills gained through experience are equally welcomed.
