Full-Time Bioinformatician
Job Description
Ensembl, based at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), is one of the most successful large-scale bioinformatics projects developing comprehensive genome data and annotation services for a worldwide audience. The Ensembl Regulation team is looking for a bioinformatician to join us to develop our regulatory genomics pipeline, to analyse its outputs and predictions, and contribute to its continued improvement.
Ensembl Regulation’s core product is a computational pipeline that annotates parts of the genome as having regulatory function – regions which control how genes are expressed in different tissues and cell types. These elements are crucial for understanding individual variation, development, evolution, and disease progression. Our services are freely accessible to scientific communities and are used in basic science, agricultural and biomedical research.
Your role
As part of the Ensembl Regulation team, you will innovate, extend, and maintain Ensembl Regulation’s analysis pipelines and supporting products. Your primary responsibilities will include:
- Analysing our pipeline’s outputs to assess quality and biological relevance
- Generating reports with plots and basic statistics using R or Python
- Implementing new bioinformatic analyses to process and integrate new assay types (e.g. DNA methylation, single-cell measurements)
- Ensuring our products are maintainable, usable and reliable through the use of testing and documentation
This position offers a motivated candidate an exciting opportunity to contribute to open-source bioinformatics resources and to develop domain knowledge in a fast-moving scientific area. You will work closely with a team of bioinformaticians and developers and interact with other groups at EMBL-EBI and beyond.
You have
- A MSc or PhD in a related field, or an equivalent qualification or professional experience.
- Experience developing scientific software and/or analysing the results of large-scale datasets, including producing plots with Python or R.
- Ability to use collaborative software environments like Git.
- Experience analysing high-throughput sequencing data will be strongly preferred.
- Willingness to contribute to pipeline development in step with the standard procedures and timelines of the wider Ensembl project.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Willingness to work as part of a collaborative team to identify issues, discuss solutions and refine details to reach our high-level requirements and goals.
- An understanding of gene regulation and the associated biology will be an advantage.
- Experience analysing functional genomics data such as ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq, WGBS, or RNA-seq.
- Experience with containerisation products such as Docker or Kubernetes.
