Established as a community non-profit in 1972, The Center provides targeted programs and services to the full diversity of the San Diego LGBTQ community. The mission of The Center is to enhance and sustain the health and well-being of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, transgender, nonbinary, immigrant, and HIV communities for the betterment of our entire San Diego region. Our vision is to create a Center and Center culture where every person feels and knows that they are welcomed, valued, and supported. As the beacon for our regional LGBTQ community, we actively recommit to being a more vibrant, bold, innovative, safe, and modern center each day than the day before. The Center is sex-positive and provides advocacy and critical health and social support services to support our community members through all stages of life, focusing on our deeply held values of equity, social justice, and client-centered, trauma-informed care. The Center currently has over 75 staff working at five facilities across San Diego County.

 

As of 04/01/2023, the Center has relaxed its COVID-19 vaccination requirement for employment. New employees are encouraged but not required to be vaccinated. The Centre reserves the right to amend this requirement based on health concerns and/or governmental recommendations to protect the well-being of our community. If this requirement changes, employees will have 30 days to comply.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Director of Sexual Health and Wellness, the Community Health Educator will provide services under The Center’s Sexual Health and Wellness program that ensures that individuals are empowered to take charge of their sexual health and well-being. Comprised of five tenets, this program empowers by utilizing a robust combination of education, engagement, and services; Fights to reduce stigma and barriers and improve access to screening; Tests so individuals know their status; Protects by providing information to make informed choices on how to remain HIV negative and STI free; and Treats by providing resources and care should they be diagnosed with HIV and other STIs.

 

PRIMARY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide Services Under The Center’s Sexual Health and Wellness Department

  • Conduct HIV, HCV, and STI testing and counseling.
  • Educate clients about PrEP, HIV, STIs, and provide systems navigation.
  • Enroll clients in health care coverage as needed.
  • Follow up with clients about PrEP adherence and services received.
  • Crisis intervention and linking clients to PEP when appropriate.

 

Serve As Primary Staff Supporting The Center’s NEXUS Grant Award

  • Recruit eligible participants to enroll in the NEXUS study.
  • Schedule and conduct interviews with eligible clients.
  • Develop rapport and maintain client engagement throughout the 12-month study.
  • Maintain client records using approved forms and procedures and compliance with HIPAA must be maintained.
  • Prepare monthly/quarterly programmatic reports as required.
  • Meet all grant and contract deliverables.

 

Conduct Community Outreach With The Center’s #BeTheGeneration Campaign

  • Increase the participation of individuals with substance use/misuse in recovery-oriented services.
  • Collaborate with The Center’s Communications department to develop engaging campaigns and messaging to promote substance use/misuse services at The Center.
  • Expand The Center’s BTG campaign to include messaging about substance misuse among individuals living with HIV.
  • Conduct community forums and events related to PrEP and sexual health.
  • Conduct community outreach with The Center’s #BeTheGeneration campaign.
  • Represent The Center at special events advocating for diversity and inclusion.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education/Experience Previous case management and/or client navigator experience providing services to clients living with HIV/AIDS is required. Certification as an HIV test counselor is required.
  • Professional Skills:
  • Must demonstrate competence in working with a variety of diverse populations.
  • Must demonstrate a client-centered, sex-positive, non-judgmental attitude about sexual health.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks with shifting priorities.
  • Those with lived experience as a member of a historically under-served community (i.e., low-income, communities of color, LGBT communities, immigrant communities, etc.) are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Technology Skills: Must be comfortable working in PC/Windows-based environments. Must have proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Outlook, and Excel
  • Language Skills: Fluency in English and Spanish is required.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education/Experience: Previous experience with research and/or serving as a research assistant, experience with HIV prevention in diverse communities, Local Evaluation Online (LEO) software, ADAP, and Covered California enrollment experience is strongly preferred.
  • Technology Skills: Experience with using electronic health records is preferred.
  • Language Skills: Fluency in Spanish is highly preferred.

 

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

  • Compensation: The pay range for this position is $22.00 – $23.69 per hour and is commensurate with experience. This is a Full-Time Regular Non-Exempt position.
