Are you interested in using your community organizing and outreach skills to lead and launch a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and other benefits to increase health equity and nutritional security of our neighbors?

The Benefits Outreach Manager will lead and manage the planning, development, and implementation of the Food Bank’s participation in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Outreach work, a program designed to expand access to benefit and safety net programs across the Food Bank’s footprint.

The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank is a respected, regional nonprofit providing nourishing food and hope to neighbors. Founded in 1981, the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank serves 25 counties and eight cities in central and western Virginia, from Loudoun and Winchester in the north to the Lexington and Lynchburg areas in the south. We provide food to nearly 119,000 visitors each month through a partner network of more than 200 food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters, as well as through nutrition programs for children, seniors, and rural neighbors. Total revenues of approximately $50 million and an operating budget of $13 million support the work of more than 65 employees in four locations, including our headquarters and main distribution center in Verona.

The key responsibilities for the Benefits Outreach Manager include:

  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Programs to establish a SNAP outreach program
  • Develop and manage relationships with local Department of Social Services staff and other state agencies to maximize SNAP outreach and enrollment at the county level
  • Train and manage volunteers to provide outreach and enrollment services, develop training materials and resources.
  • Establish a benefits outreach hotline to expand broader engagement and referral strategies across BRAFB’s network
  • Collaborate with Director of Programs and others to evaluate internal progress, refine processes, and identify areas for growth and improvement

Required Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social sciences/services, public health, nonprofit management, or related field, or equivalent amount of training and experience, required;
  • Minimum 2 years relevant work, professional, or volunteer role experience in program planning, development, and/or evaluation required;
  • Supervisory experience (e.g., staff, interns, or volunteers) required
  • Outreach, grassroots, or community organization and/or program development experience is highly desired
  • Experience with federal nutrition programs desired;
  • Experience in nonprofit environment desired.
  • Knowledge of food access programs, health equity, and/or experience in social service agencies or multi-cultural environments preferred
  • Proficiency in Spanish a plus.

The Benefits Outreach Manager is a full-time position, reporting to the Director of Programs, and offers an effective and healthy work culture, competitive salary, and excellent benefits.

Duties may require work during evenings and on weekends. Must have a valid driver’s license with a good driving record. Driving and travel throughout the service area is required to perform relational and administrative functions at agencies and program sites. The role can be based in either the Verona or Charlottesville location.
