Position Overview
This position is a part-time Band Director for students in grades 4-8 (10 hours/week). The Band Director will assess student skill levels and lead beginning, intermediate, and advanced level classes. This position reports to the Director of Teaching and Learning and works in collaboration with the Music Teacher to support students’ musical development.
Job Responsibilities
- Develop students’ techniques for playing brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments.
- Teach the basics of note reading, rhythm reading, part playing, musical terminology, musical independence, practice habits, and other skills needed to participate successfully in a band.
- Cover appropriate band literature styles for school and competitive performances.
- Create opportunities for students to listen to and play music that promotes awareness of, respect for, and responsiveness to a diversity of cultures.
- Create an inclusive environment that allows all members to be safe, valued, and respected by implementing best practices and developing meaningful relationships with all students.
- Ensure that lessons/rehearsals reflect accommodations for individual students’ learning styles and needs.
- Plan and organize before/after-school rehearsals, concerts, showcases, and other community performances and events, in coordination with the school calendar.
- Engage with teachers and students to encourage participation in the band program.
- Organize, maintain, and develop an updated inventory of musical instruments and equipment.
- Engage and plan with the general Music Teacher to align programmatic curricular and extracurricular activities, and to support students’ musical and social-emotional development.
- Create opportunities for collaboration with outside members of the music community to provide students opportunities to engage with music outside of Armstrong, including exposure to high school band experiences and/or professional performances.
- Develop opportunities for students to perform and/or compete in more serious environments, such as those offered by the California Music Educators Association.
Education, Certifications, and Work-Related Experience
Required
- Experience and/or strong aptitude in leading student bands or instrumental ensembles
- Musical skill competency, including the ability to play multiple instruments
Preferred
- Valid teaching credential or Masters in Music and/or Education
- Experience with and understanding of children in grades 4-8 who learn differently
