Full-Time Backend Engineer

About CareerVillage.org

CareerVillage.org is dedicated to democratizing access to career information and advice for underrepresented people. As an Engineer at CareerVillage.org, you’ll be helping build the technology to enact our mission: to democratize access to career information and advice for millions of underrepresented youth. You’ll be contributing to two products: (1) our flagship crowdsourcing platform, which supports millions of learners, over 150,000 professionals, and thousands of teachers who have joined our movement and (2) our new product, Coach, an AI Career Coach (read about it in Fast Company and Forbes). This is a full-time exempt position, reporting to the Director of Engineering.

What you’ll do

  • Write code using modern frameworks with a special focus on backend services and API development.
  • Design schema across a range of storage technologies including SQL, NoSQL, and Vector databases.
  • Help maintain and improve deployment and integration testing pipelines.
  • Collaborate with product designers, product managers, and frontend engineers to discuss the design, experience, and functionality of our products.
  • Draft documentation outlining technical approaches to complex problems and discussing their merits with colleagues.
  • Review code from team members, considering readability, maintainability, performance, and testability.
  • Write automated unit tests to confirm the functionality of existing products before and after new feature development.
  • Participate in design reviews of other engineers’ proposals for solutions to complex problems.
  • Help investigate bug reports and engineering requests from end users and internal stakeholders.

What you bring

  • 3+ years experience developing world-class digital products, with a particular focus on backend systems, interacting with data stores, APIs, deployment pipelines, and managing cloud services.
  • Experience with Python and SQL
  • Experience with some combination of the following: Django, Docker, AWS, Jenkins, Javascript

Location

We are a remote-first organization and can hire for this role from the following states in the US: Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia and West Virginia. Hybrid optional in NYC. CareerVillage.org has team members worldwide, with our HQ in Palo Alto, CA. This role includes possible travel for staff on-site every other year or so, and possible travel to meet up with your department once a year.
