The Challenge
We are looking for an Aviation Program Coordinator to join our Aviation team in our Raleigh headquarters.
In this role you will:
    • Develop and manage aviation programs and initiatives that strengthen NC airport management and operations.
    • Direct the NC Airport Technical Assistance Program (NC AirTAP); a program managed in cooperation with university partners helping NC airports improve their safety, quality, and operational efficiency.
    • Manage the NC AirTAP Steering Committee and work collaboratively with stakeholders to inform and offer its programs, including the Airport Leadership and Management Program (ALMP), 12-course signature NC AirTAP program covering every aspect of airport operations and management, and its related NC Airport Professional credentialing program.
    • Monitor airport/aviation safety, operational challenges, trends, best practices, and develop workshops and materials to support airports in improving operations, safety, and security.
    • Serve as NCDOT’s representative to the Federal Aviation Administration Safety Team (FAASTeam) to leverage its resources to help to lower the aviation accident rate and create a safety culture within the NC aviation community.
    • Explore and help implement aviation technology innovations that benefit the state’s public airports, including managing a new initiative to deploy airport operations counting tools at NC’s public airports.
    • Manages our Aviation Career Education (ACE) Academy Grant Program that supports NC aviation workforce development with grants for public airports that host aerospace and aviation career-focused summer academies for middle and high school students.
In addition, you will:
    • Support efforts to expand the talent pipeline for airports and aviation careers that are in high demand and emerging, such as pilots, maintenance technicians, air traffic control personnel and unmanned aircraft systems specialists, as well as engineers and contractors working in airport development.
    • Support airport and partner programs that inspire and expose NC residents to aviation careers, with a focus on programs targeting youth and underrepresented, unemployed, and underemployed populations.
    • Manage the Division’s annual statewide youth art competition.
    • Expand the Division’s participation in NCDOT engineering and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) and Minority-Supporting Institutions (MSIs) internship programs.
    • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with NCDOT’s recruitment team to ensure Aviation is well represented in its outreach activities.
    • Develop, manage, and report on our strategies and action plan to build a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive organization and recruit a more demographically representative staff, in collaboration with the Division and NCDOT’s HR and recruiting staff.
    • Identify sources of public/private funding to support our airport support programs, work with partners to pursue them, and manage implementation and reporting tasks.
    • Work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders, including NCDOT staff, airports, industry, educators, and others to develop and manage programs and initiatives.
    • Write, edit, and proof materials related to the activities of the business development team, including memos, reports, emails, invitations, PowerPoint presentations, Excel spreadsheets, and communication.
    • Work with Division staff and the NCDOT Communications Officer to publicize initiatives and results.
    • Give presentations to stakeholder groups of all kinds.
    • Participate in and contribute to the Division’s strategic planning, tracking and reporting activities focused on advancing the agency’s vision and mission.
What You Bring

    • Experience in one or more of the following:
      • Airport management and operations
      • Coordinating and managing programs
      • Working knowledge of NC Airport Technical Assistance Program (NC AirTAP)
      • Working knowledge of airport/aviation safety policies or programs
      • Writing aviation programs grants
      • Aviation recruitment
    • Experience developing and implementing strategic plans and managing programs.
    • Experience engaging and mobilizing staff, contractors, volunteers, and stakeholders to achieve a common vision and goal.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Experience developing and managing multiple projects.
    • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams).
 
Education and Experience
    • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, and
    • 3+ years of experience; or
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
