Full-Time Associate Director of Local Campaigns
Job Description
Everytown for Gun Safety, the nation’s largest gun violence prevention advocacy group, is seeking a senior leader with issue advocacy/policy campaign experience and strong management and interpersonal skills to serve as Associate Director of Local Campaigns. This position reports to the Senior Director of Local Government Affairs. The Local Government Affairs team works with local officials to provide resources to end community based gun violence and advocate for and advance local, state, and federal gun safety measures.
Position is based in New York City.
Responsibilities Include:
Local Campaign Strategy and Management
- Develop strategy for and oversee local campaigns across four regional pods, with autonomy and support from the Senior Director when needed.
- Direct local campaigns in one regional pod, developing and executing each campaign’s strategic, tactical, and communications plans.
- Develop tools and strategy, in coordination with field, state, legal and communications teams, for distributive local campaigns to be executed by Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action volunteers across the country.
- Cultivate relationships and partner with stakeholders, including partner organizations, law enforcement, elected officials, coalitions, networks, and influencers, building grassroots and grasstops capacity.
- Become steeped in gun violence prevention policy in order to promote common sense policy and defeat policies that put our communities at risk.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the overall political environment both regionally and nationally, with an eye towards delivering local gun violence prevention legislation and other appropriate interventions.
- Represent Everytown in various external capacities, including at conferences and events.
- Represent the Local Government Affairs team in issue-specific or long-term campaign teams, at the discretion of the Senior Director.
Team Coordination and Management
- Directly manage and coach three Local Campaigners, each assigned to one of four regional pods.
- In partnership with the Associate Director of Local Initiatives and Manager of Mayoral Outreach, develop and execute strategy for connecting local campaign and regional pod work with broader efforts of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns coalition.
Knowledge and Skills Requirements:
- Experience with local government affairs required; at least 10 years experience directing issue advocacy/policy campaigns. At least 5 years of direct management experience.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- Understand how stereotypes, bias, and forms of racism in America (including structural racism, implicit bias, gender bias, religious bias, ageism, and bias based on gender identity or sexual orientation) impact our society, with an expectation that you will develop an ability to articulate the connection between these large societal issues and the disproportionate impact of gun violence on specific demographic groups in America
- Understand how dynamics of power, voice, and privilege impact one-on-one and group interactions, and a commitment to using power, voice, and privilege to make our movement more equitable
- Outstanding attention to detail.
- Ability to develop strong relationships with internal and external teams and stakeholders
- A proactive, creative, and dogged approach to anticipating and solving problems
- Ability to be flexible and thrive in a fast-paced organization with multiple projects and priorities
- Independent and creative thinker who is confident offering their own ideas
- Some travel required
