OVERVIEW  

The Exemplars in Global Health (EGH) program is a global coalition of partners including researchers, experts, funders, academics, country stakeholders and implementers. EGH aims to help country-level decision makers, global partners, and funders make strategic decisions, allocate resources, and craft evidence-based policies. A small, core team supporting EGH is based at Gates Ventures, the private office of Bill Gates, and closely collaborates with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. 

 

THE POSITION

This position sits within the Communications and Platform Vertical of the Exemplars in Global Health program, which is part of the Health and Life Sciences Team at Gates Ventures. The Communications and Platform Vertical supports the success of the EGH program by working to build broad brand awareness and credibility to help policymakers, funders, and researchers improve the quality of global health decisions. This team works closely with the Partnerships and Impact Team, which leads broad, cross-topic impact strategy, and our Topic Teams, which oversee topic selection, research, and dissemination and impact. 

 

For this limited term, this role will focus on the following workstreams: 

  1. Managing the operations of EGH’s Communications and Platform Vertical, supporting cross-vertical functions, such as leadership engagement, program integration, goal setting, and people management.
  2. Progressing the program’s broad communications strategy and associated workstreams.
  3. Progressing communications partnerships, including with VIPs, partner organizations, and media.

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Strategy 

  • In partnership with the Communications Manager and Senior Platform Manager, as well as in consultation with the Partnerships and Impact and Topic Teams, ensure smooth implementation of communications strategy. This includes providing thought leadership and partnership to Communications Manager and vendor partners on editorial calendar planning, campaign planning, brand standardization and adherence, channel analytics, and more.  
  • Support Senior Platform Manager to lead and implement content type definition and standardization and brand guidelines, driving toward team-wide adoption and adherence. 
  • Support Communications Manager to implement channel strategy and content, including, implementation of a new social channel, and as needed, reviewing, and providing feedback on Exemplars News stories, social media and newsletter copy, communications toolkits, key messaging, etc. 
  • With support from team, manage the maintenance and creation of materials for dissemination and media engagement, including distillation of key lessons and insights, and toolkit(s) that can be adapted for various audiences. 

 

Partnerships 

  • Drive forward media engagement strategy with support from Communications Manager, vendor partner, and Partnerships and Impact team, with input where needed from Topic Teams and Managing Director. 
  • Progress VIP engagement strategy with support from vendor partners and Partnerships and Impact team, in consultation with Communications Manager for implementation. 
  • Oversee Communications Partnerships strategy, which includes leading on correspondence with communications counterparts at key organizations where needed and supporting Communications Manager on implementation and tracking. 
  • As needed, support other partner engagement efforts, including communications planning for EGH’s network of research partners, etc. 

 

Program 

  • Manage at least one direct report. 
  • Establish regular engagement with Managing Director as needed, including recurring meetings, timely submission of deliverables, and facilitation of decisions. 
  • In partnership with Communications and Platform and Partnership and Impact teams, lead preparation for external communications engagements and presentations to GV leadership. 
  • Adhere to related deadlines and input into cross-vertical operations including annual goal setting, impact tracking, and analytics reporting. 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 10+ years of experience in the field of communications, preferably in Global Health 
  • Media experience, particularly in LMICs preferred. 
  • Excellent communications skills, including editing, writing, and verbal presentation abilities. 
  • Track record of excellent people, stakeholder, and agency management, with experience working with varying seniority levels to set clear direction. 
  • Track record of increasing responsibility in competitive environments and experience organizing and driving complex projects. 

 

Compensation & Benefits 

This is a 1-year limited term employment (LTE) role. The salary range for this position is $160,000 – $180,000 per year. Starting salary offers will vary depending on a number of factors, including education, experience, and qualifications. Gates Ventures offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance and a 401(k) program with employer match.
