Full-Time Associate Dean of Public Services

Job Description

Want to participate at the strategic level in the development and execution of library goals that advance the University of North Texas (UNT) as a national research university?  If so, the University of North Texas Libraries want you!  The Associate Dean for Public Services position is responsible for the overall activities of the Public Services Division, including leading the development and enhancement of public services, innovative programs, and equitable policies that create active learning environments in physical and virtual spaces.  This is a 12-month, benefits-eligible position reporting to the Dean of Libraries.

The Associate Dean for Public Services is the primary operational leader responsible for providing direction and leadership to the departments of the Public Services Division.  They serve as a member of the Library Administrative Council (Associate Deans) and the Dean’s Council of the UNT Libraries, working collaboratively to lead and oversee work required to achieve the strategic vision of the UNT Libraries. These councils are comprised of senior management staff responsible for jointly creating a collegial, constructive, and efficient work environment in the UNT Libraries.

The Public Services Division provides high quality library services and outreach programs to the extended UNT community. The Associate Dean for Public Services expands collaborative partnerships with campus partners to support information literacy, student success, research initiatives and outreach to multiple communities.

Other Roles & Responsibilities

  • Develops division goals that support the Libraries’ Strategic Directions.
  • Evaluates operations of the division to make best use of technology, staff, and resources
  • Manages the division budget and operational expenditures.
  • Cultivates productive interdepartmental relations and cooperative team operations.
  • Promotes and supports professional development of division employees.
  • Serves as a member of the Library Administrative Council and the Library Dean’s Council (LDC) for UNT Libraries
  • Participates at the strategic level in the development of library goals that advance UNT as a national research university
  • Works with library and campus HR staff to recruit new staff, foster a positive and constructive organizational culture, and resolve personnel problems and issues
  • Represents the UNT Libraries in consortia public services matters with other libraries
  • Participates in library-wide assessment activities
  • Maintains a collegial working relationship with other library departments and divisions
  • Works to meet the requirements for scholarly, creative, and professional activities
  • Works to meet the requirements for service to the libraries, university, and the community
  • Fosters positive relations with faculty, students, and staff

Required qualifications

  • ALA-accredited Master’s Degree, or equivalent, in Library or Information Science
  • Minimum of five years of leadership level roles in an academic institution
  • Minimum of five years of supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, motivate, and lead a collaborative, innovative, collegial team
  • Demonstrated commitment and support of professional development and continuous improvement for library employees
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, prioritize, and resolve problems quickly and effectively, including handling complex and sensitive patron and staff issues with patience, diplomacy, respect, and discretion

The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:

  • Evidence of a strong commitment to public services and user-centered reference and instruction within an academic or research library setting
  • Awareness of established and emerging developments/trends in academic library services spaces, services, user engagement, and programming
  • Familiarity with best practices, trends, and assessment strategies related to public services
  • Demonstrated record of scholarly activities and participation in service equivalent to rank
