Full-Time Assistant Resident Engineer – Entry Level!
Job Description
- Assist our Resident Engineer in the day-to-day contract administration of major and minor transportation projects.
- Supervise NCDOT and contractor staff and prepare/evaluate their performance.
- Promote a safe working environment.
- Gain a working knowledge of NCDOT policies and procedures.
- Keep records necessary for preparation of monthly and final estimates.
- Work closely with contractors, utility companies, and other government agencies.
- Communicate with the public and news media.
- Review and evaluate data collected by field staff.
- Prepare technical letters and reports.
- Review contract plans, specifications, and material testing results.
- Train, coordinate, and supervise junior staff.
- Knowledge in engineering standards, policies, and procedures related to transportation engineering, including the principles and practices of Civil Engineering.
- Experience reading and interpreting highway construction plans and contracts.
- Customer service experience.
- Experience administering contracts.
- Fearless about working at heights over water and/or traffic and climbing on bridge substructures and superstructures.
- Working knowledge of construction methods, materials, and equipment.
- Experience and skills in the operation of survey equipment, computers, and drafting instruments.
- Ability to understand, explain, and administer contracts, interpret construction plans, provisions, standards, and specifications.
- Good communications skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, contractors, and the public.
- Ability to withstand extreme weather and terrain conditions while performing duties.
- Capable of working safely in office and outside environments with possibility of exposure to hazards on construction sites including heights, highway traffic, climbing on the substructure and superstructure of bridges, and traversing rough terrain in evaluating highway construction.
- Fitness to perform moderate physical activity including walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing.
- You apply a safety philosophy and program to all operations, and be able to work safely in an office and in the field.
- Safety toe shoes.
- Ability to safely drive a state vehicle.
- We may require registration as a professional engineer by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
- You may be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours to resolve project issues.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience.
