SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Located just outside of Seattle, WA, Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWTech) was founded in 1949, and is the only public institute of technology in Washington State, that provides students with the latest cutting edge skills relevant to today’s workplace. LWTech offers ten applied bachelor’s degrees, more than 40 associate degrees and 93 professional certificates, in 43 areas of study, including STEM-focused programs in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Summary of Responsibilities
The college is seeking an individual with proven teaching skill and leadership ability to teach in and assist with the growth and development of its English and Communication Departments. As a professor at LWTech, you will become part of a dynamic academic program and collaborate with student-centered colleagues to help prepare students for degree completion and successful transitions into the workforce or further education. The Written Communication professor will develop and deliver both English courses and Public Speaking courses. The individual chosen for this position will take part in college activities; advise students; mentor part-time faculty; assist with the operation of the English and Communication Departments; and assist with the continued development of the college’s basic and general education division and direct transfer and baccalaureate programs. This position reports to the Dean of Instruction, Basic and General Education. This is a full-time, Annual Renewable position with the possibility of converting to tenure track based on experience.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Teach pre-college and college-level English courses
• Teach public speaking courses
• Use effective teaching practices to promote equitable student learning
• Apply transparency in teaching and learning to class policies, materials, and assessments
• Facilitate an inclusive class culture
• Use current college learning management systems and integrate best practices in online learning
• Co-design and team-teach in public speaking and English learning communities as part of the college’s Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (IBEST) program
• Teach to and assess college-wide, distribution area, and course learning outcomes
• Collaborate with professional-technical, basic skills, and general education faculty in developing curriculum, scheduling courses, and coordinating department activities
• Perform advising, recruiting, and retention activities
• Maintain regular office hours
• Serve as an engaged member of the English and Communication Departments, attending department, division, and college meetings; assisting with curriculum and program design; mentoring part-time faculty; and assisting with preparations for visits from outside groups
• Collaborate with Enrollment Services staff, Disability Support Services staff, Lake Washington Technical Academy staff, student advisors and counselors, Employment Resource Center staff, and others to enhance student achievement
• Pursue appropriate professional development activities to stay current in instructional techniques and maintain familiarity with ongoing developments in the field
• Advance the college’s mission, vision, and goals
• Take part in college accreditation, program review, and college committees as specified in the faculty bargained agreement
• Perform other professional activities as approved by the Dean
QUALIFICATIONS
• Masters’ degree in English required
• Recent experience teaching college English and public speaking, speech, or debate courses required
• Demonstrated ability to work successfully with students, staff, and community from diverse backgrounds required
• Excellent communication skills and ability to function as an effective team member
• Experience using technology in the classroom
• Experience in writing and deploying course and program curriculum, including approaches and content that promote equitable representation and student success
• Evidence of recent professional development activity
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Compensation & Work Schedule Placement on the faculty salary schedule is based on an individual assessment of education and experience. This positions ranges from $67,978-$80,024 per year; salary is for an academic year (173 days) and as may be adjusted according to the faculty bargained agreement. Working hours are usually Monday through Friday between 7:30 am to 4:30 pm, with some evening advising and other flexible hours as needed. Summer quarter employment may be available based on student enrollment. This is a full-time, Annual Renewable position with the possibility of converting to tenure track based on experience.
