SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Located just outside of Seattle, WA, Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWTech) was founded in 1949, and is the only public institute of technology in Washington State, that provides students with the latest cutting edge skills relevant to today’s workplace. LWTech offers ten applied bachelor’s degrees, more than 40 associate degrees and 93 professional certificates, in 43 areas of study, including STEM-focused programs in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Develop and teach a variety of courses related to Design, in both the Associates and Bachelor’s degree programs in Design. Foster student achievement of discipline-specific, college-wide, and transfer degree learning outcomes. Assess and modify curriculum as needed to meet the changing needs of industry. Teach classes in a variety of timeframes and delivery formats. Work with other faculty and administrators to plan, implement, and update curriculum and program materials. Take part in college activities, student advising, mentoring adjunct faculty and scheduling. This position reports to the Division Dean.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Develop and teach a variety of courses appropriate to the Associate’s and Bachelor’s degree program goals
• Teach a variety of Design theory and practice courses from introductory to capstone level in the lower Associate Degree program to a diverse student population. Topics include web and mobile design, interaction design, user-centered design, design software, elements and principles of design, and application of those principles.
• Teach junior and senior level courses in theory and practice of design at the upper division Bachelor’s level to a diverse student population. Topics include Advanced Design Theory, Design Thinking, User Experience, and User Interface.
• Teach productive and constructive work habits, study skills, and core skills as identified by the college; develop and incorporate instructional methods that support best learning practices; develop and teach curriculum that supports the college’s global outcomes, cultural diversity, and non-discrimination; model the communications, teamwork, and critical thinking skills needed for employment in the program field; design learning experiences for a variety of learning styles
• Facilitate student learning through traditional activities and various alternative teaching/learning methods
• Advise students on educational and career planning
• Identify course and program learning outcomes
• Perform advising, recruiting and retention activities
• Communicate expectations and establish clear grading criteria through appropriate instructional means, including but not limited to developing course syllabi, handouts, and materials that support the instructional process; evaluate student progress, maintain appropriate records, and provide clear, timely feedback; deal consistently and fairly with all students
• Pursue appropriate professional development activities to stay current in assigned teaching field and technical field
• Develop and maintain industry and community support for Design programs; attend advisory committee meetings and maintain contact with industry for job placement and outreach opportunities
• Develop and assess program, curriculum, and educational outcomes
• Actively participate as team member in program management and campus initiatives
• Be familiar with and advance the college’s mission, vision, and goals and how they relate to academic and technical programs
• Follow college, local, state and federal policies and procedures; develop and maintain classroom and lab procedures, including safety, that follow local, state, and federal policies and procedures; share responsibility for educational facilities and equipment
• Attend department and college meetings as appropriate
• Work with college counselors and other faculty to identify and incorporate general education learning needs for technical students
• Maintain regular office hours
• Take part in college accreditation, program review and college committees as specified in the faculty bargained agreement
• May receive, as approved, release time to work on professional growth activities, either after two years of full-time continuous service, or for the tenure review process
• Perform other professional activities as approved by the Dean

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in subject area or related discipline required. MFA, MS, M Des, or Master’s with a User Centered Design and/or Interaction Design concentration preferred.
• Two years successful full-time design industry experience; knowledge and experience in an Design discipline including interaction design or graphic design
• Hold or be eligible to obtain a state professional-technical certificate to teach in the subject area
• Recent college teaching experience and experience with various teaching methods, including classroom, online and blended environments; college or university preferred
• Ability to use current college online learning management systems
• Excellent communication skills and ability to function as an effective team member in a collaborative environment
• A passion for teaching
• Experience working independently, demonstrated leadership skills
• Experience in and commitment to working with undergraduate education strongly preferred
• Willingness to participate in college, division, or department committees
• Demonstrated ability to work successfully with students, staff, and community from diverse backgrounds, including native languages, and a commitment to a culturally diverse work environment

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Compensation & Work Schedule Placement on the faculty salary schedule is based on an individual assessment of education and experience. This positions ranges from $74,028-$87,146 per year; salary is for an academic year (173 days) and as may be adjusted according to the faculty bargained agreement. Summer quarter employment may be available based on student enrollment.
