Assistant Professor, Justice Studies, James Madison University

The Department of Justice Studies at James Madison University seeks applicants for a tenure-track position at the assistant professor level. As an interdisciplinary department that employs faculty who specialize in a range of disciplines (e.g., criminal justice, criminology, disability studies, educational studies, geography, political science, sociology), the successful candidate will contribute to the interdisciplinarity of the department by facilitating pedagogy and scholarship that addresses questions of justice in broad and overlapping contexts.

The College of Arts and Letters in which the Department of Justice Studies is housed, enrolls over 3,100 undergraduate majors and about 150 graduate students across ten academic units in the humanities, social sciences, and communication studies. Home to several interdisciplinary centers and institutes, the College employs 270 full-time faculty. We embrace the teacher-scholar model, and encourage excellent applicants within our disciplines, as well as scholars and teachers eager to connect their work in the department with programs and initiatives across the college and the university.

Duties and Responsibilities:

We are especially interested in scholars with expertise in issues related to global and social justice that include one or more of the following areas of focus:

● Disability studies

● Feminist, intersectional, or otherwise critical justice studies

● Global Health

● Peace studies

● Restorative justice

● Violence and conflict

Successful applicants should have a demonstrated ability to teach core courses in the major, especially 200-level introductory courses in the Global Justice and/or Social Justice concentrations. Applicants who could enhance offerings in the general education program or any of the university’s interdisciplinary minor programs including, African, African American, and Diaspora Studies (AAAD); Asian Studies; Disability Studies; Latin American, Latinx, and Caribbean Studies (LAXC); Middle Eastern Communities and Migrations; and/or Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies are also encouraged to apply.

Qualifications:

A Ph.D. or other terminal degree in Educational or Health Studies, Humanities, Social Sciences, or other relevant program is required. Applicants who expect to complete their degree by Fall 2024 are encouraged to apply.
