Job Summary:

Develop and teach a variety of courses related to the diesel and heavy equipment technician program. This program leads to a certificate or an AAS degree in diesel technology. Foster student achievement of discipline-specific, college-wide, and transfer degree learning outcomes. Assess and modify curriculum as needed to meet the changing needs of the diesel industry. Teach classes in a variety of timeframes and delivery formats. Work with other faculty and administrators to plan, implement, and update program and program materials. Take part in college activities, student advising, mentoring part-time faculty and scheduling. This position reports to the division dean.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Prepare students to apply technical knowledge and skills to repair, service, and maintain diesel related systems in tractor trailer, locomotive, mass transit, heavy equipment, power generation and marine applications, including but not limited to:

• Welding and fabrication, vehicle chassis and frames

• Electro-mechanical control systems

• Electro pneumatic control systems

• Electro-hydraulic control systems

• Hydraulic engine control systems

• Pneumatic engine control systems

• Marine propulsion control systems

• Off-highway equipment motion control systems

• On/off-highway Telemetric systems

• Electronic logging devices

• Power generation control systems

• Electrical circuits, electronics, multiplexing, body control modules and instrumentation

• Principles of technology

• Power trains, clutches, converters, transmissions, and differentials

• Finals, undercarriage, steering, suspension and alignment

• Pneumatic systems and traction control

• Fluid power components and schematics

• Brake systems, ABS and EBS components and configuration

• Engines, emissions, fuel injection, subsystems and controls

• Plan and develop a variety of program courses appropriate to the diesel program goals; develop and assess curriculum

• Teach productive and constructive work habits, study skills, and core skills as identified by the college; develop and incorporate instructional methods that support best learning practices; model the communication, computation, and human relations skills required for employment in diesel technology fields

• Develop and teach lessons that foster and support cultural diversity and non-discrimination; design learning experiences for the unique characteristics of individual students

• Develop and maintain classroom and lab procedures, including safety, that follow local, state, and federal policies and procedures; share responsibility for educational facilities and equipment

• Communicate expectations and establish clear grading criteria through appropriate instructional means, including but not limited to developing course syllabi, handouts, and materials that support the instructional process; evaluate student progress, maintain appropriate records, and provide clear, timely feedback; deal consistently and fairly with all students

• Pursue appropriate professional development activities to stay current in the assigned teaching field and technical field

• Develop and maintain industry and community support for diesel and transportation programs; attend advisory committee meetings and maintain contact with industry for co-op job placement and follow-up activities

• Be familiar with and advance the college’s mission, vision, and goals and how they relate to academic and technical programs; follow college, local, state and federal policies and procedures; attend department and college meetings as appropriate

• Work with college counselors, special needs faculty, and other faculty to identify and incorporate general education learning needs for technical students

• Other duties as assigned

In addition, full-time faculty will also:

• Maintain regular office hours

• Develop and assess program, curriculum, and educational outcomes

• Perform advising, recruiting and retention activities

• Take part in college accreditation, program review and college committees as specified in the faculty bargained agreement

• Perform other professional activities as approved by the dean

QUALIFICATIONS

• Two years full-time related industry work experience required

• Associate degree required

• Knowledge and experience in current diesel technology related to diagnosis and repair; knowledge and skills must be in all phases of the occupation including: engines, drive trains, suspension systems, fuel systems and electrical/electronic computer systems

• Industry certifications strongly preferred

• Hold or be eligible to obtain a state professional-technical certificate to teach in the technical area; valid First Aid certificate required

• Recent college teaching experience and experience with various teaching methods preferred

• Ability to use computer technology as a component of instructional delivery required, with willingness to learn and integrate the college’s online learning management system into content delivery within one year of hire

• Excellent written and verbal communication and customer service skills

• Experience in and commitment to working with undergraduate education strongly preferred

• Willingness to participate on college, division, or department committees

• Must have sensitivity and ability to successfully interact with diverse populations

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

Compensation & Work Schedule This position is for the 2024-2025 Academic year and begins September 2024. Placement on the faculty salary schedule is based on an individual assessment of education and experience. This positions ranges from $74,028-$87,146 per year; salary is for an academic year (173 days) and as may be adjusted according to the faculty bargained agreement. Summer quarter employment may be available based on student enrollment.
