OVERVIEW 

The Assistant Director, Experiential and Career Education is a full-time, professional staff member in the Division of Campus Life and Student Success and reports to the Director of Experiential and Career Education.

CaPD provides education and services for approximately 3,400 undergraduate and graduate students from the College of Arts & Sciences, the School of Business Administration, and the School of Music, as well as alumni from each of these programs.  CaPD is a team of six full-time staff including an executive director, a director, two assistant directors, a career development coordinator, and an administrative specialist.  Part-time staff includes a graduate assistant, two student employees, and five Career Peers.

Qualifications 

This position requires a master’s degree and at least two years of experience in an area related to business, education, and internships.  The Assistant Director, Experiential and Career Education, will be a solutions-oriented individual who can work collaboratively and effectively with students, faculty, alumni, and employers to offer quality career and experiential education that integrates students’ academic experiences with their professional goals.

Description

The Assistant Director will provide internship advising and career exploration coaching to students across the three Colleges and Schools.  The Assistant Director is responsible for the undergraduate academic internship registration process on the DeLand Campus, including monitoring students’ completion of requirements, communicating with faculty internship instructors on a regular basis, and providing Internship Orientation sessions.  The Assistant Director develops and implements programming to increase students’ awareness of internship opportunities and to facilitate their major/career exploration and development of professional skills in preparation for internship experiences.  The Assistant Director’s work will emphasize facilitating social mobility through equitable access to connections and experiences for all students regardless of background or social capital (Evolution of Career Services in Higher Education 1900 – 2030; Dey & Cruzvergara, 2019).

Responsibilities

  • Deliver career coaching to students seeking to explore majors/careers, pathways, and internship opportunities, including advisement on the registration process for academic internships
  • Serve as career advisor for Discovery students (undecided or still deciding on major)
  • Collect, compile, and disseminate data on Discovery students to inform decisions about services and programs aimed at improving retention and success of this population
  • Provide career advising to students and alumni; specialize in providing major and career guidance to first-year and sophomore students
  • Develop and provide major and career programming for incoming students through summer and fall orientation activities
  • Improve student access to local, out-of-state, and international internship opportunities through employer development activities, collaboration with faculty, and knowledge of international internship providers
  • Provide support to academic departments interested in increasing their students’ participation in internships
  • Collaborate with department chairs and faculty internship instructors to serve as a resource for best practices in the supervision of students participating in academic internship courses
  • Collect and maintain data on students participating in academic and non-academic internships and provide to supervisor and stakeholders
  • Develop, market, and implement engaging programs to facilitate students’ participation in internships including the Internship Series and Internship Showcase
  • Administer funds to support students’ participation in internships, including marketing, awarding, disbursing, and reporting of funds in collaboration with the Office of Student Financial Planning and the Division of Development and Alumni Engagement
  • Teach the HONR 297 internship course each summer and partner with Honors faculty to conduct classroom visits to promote the course
  • Act as professional development coordinator for Peace Corps Prep Program collaborating with staff and faculty across campus
  • Serve as liaison to the Athletics Department and Discovery Student Advising (within Office of Academic Success)
  • Collaborate with the WORLD International Learning Center to provide support for international students’ participation in internship experiences
  • Represent CaPD and/or CLaSS Division on appropriate university committees and teams
  • Perform other duties as assigned related to the University’s, Division’s, and CaPD’s mission, vision, and strategic priorities

WORKING CONDITIONS

Requires some physical effort (i.e. standing and walking); occasional light lifting; manual dexterity in operation of office equipment; extended period of time at a keyboard; perceptual demands for color, sound, form and depth; and at times, hours outside the normal university schedule.
