Job Description

MISSION

Queens Botanical Garden is an urban oasis where people, plants and cultures are celebrated through inspiring gardens, innovative educational programs, and demonstrations of environmental stewardship.

Queens Botanical Garden (QBG) is a private non-profit cultural institution located on 39 acres of New York City public land in Flushing, New York. In FY21 (a pandemic year), the Garden served 159,185 visitors, including 9,544 schoolchildren. A recently completed visitor survey reveals that 45% of visitors speak a language other than English at home. This fact underscores the importance of the mission and the challenges and opportunities QBG faces daily in creating programs, exhibits and landscapes that serve the needs of people who live in and visit one of the most ethnically diverse counties in the nation. The Garden has committed itself to addressing the complex and ever-changing needs of its diverse community and to being the place where people, plants, and cultures meet.

About This Opportunity

General Statement of Duties and Responsibilities

Under supervision, assists in the general cleaning and maintenance and repair of botanical garden buildings and grounds, equipment, and facilities; performs related work.

Examples of Typical Tasks

May assist in the maintenance and repair of property, offices, greenhouses, path, sidewalks, fences, benches, and other equipment, structures, and facilities in a botanical garden (which includes snow removal, and seasonal assistance with garbage pick-up).

Assists in electrical work, painting, glazing, stone work, woodworking, shop work, metal work, or automotive repairs.

Assist in the repair and maintenance of heating apparatus and plumbing fixtures.

May operate boilers and other heating equipment.

May on occasion meet with public, including school system classes and teachers attending botanical garden instruction programs, and advises on the location of displays, display areas, buildings and exhibits, or on the arrangements and direction for public instruction groups. Aids the public in cases of accidents or injury.

Qualification Requirements

  • Elementary school graduation
  • One (1) year of experience in assisting with building construction or maintenance work.
  • A motor vehicle operator’s license valid in New York State at time of appointment and ability to maintain.
  • May be required to pass a written and/or practical test
  • May be required to obtain NY State Security Guard Certification within 3 months of employment.

Appointments and Promotions

Appointments and/or promotions to positions of this class (Attendant Guard) are subject to personnel and administration policies and procedures of the botanical garden concerned, provided that all appointees must possess at least the qualifications listed above.

The schedule for this position will be Sunday through Thursday.

This is a full-time position with benefits.  Compensation ranges from $37,861-$43,540 annually and is commensurate with experience.
