Arts Manager
Pay band: 6/G
Starting salary: € 3,546.00  gross (payable 12 months)
Location: Berlin, Germany Only.
Department: Arts.
Contract type: Fixed term contract until 8th August 2025.
Closing Date: 2nd December 2024 at 23:59 UK Time

  •  fixed gross allowances totalling 14.33% of annual gross pay
  • 30 leave days per annum

  • monthly net allowance (GIVVE card.
  • EAP (Employee Assistant Program) – employee support service provided by qualified clinicians and professionals who are experts in fields such as well-being, family matters, relationships, debt management, employment issues, consumer rights and counselling.

Requirements:

We ideally need the successful candidate to start in the role from 1st February, if not earlier. 

This role is based in Berlin, Germany and therefore you must have the legal right to work in Germany at the time of application. 

 

German and English, both at C1 level (CEFR).

We are unable to support with mobility, relocation or sponsorship. 

British Council supports working in new ways such as hybrid working, subject to approval by line management and conditional upon our ability to provide the appropriate level of service. This may not be appropriate for all roles but can be explored at interview.


The Team:

Our work in Arts is through four global programmes: Culture Connects addresses the need for artistic and cultural exchange between the UK and countries internationally to be supported and expanded. Spotlights on Culture leverages the cultural assets of the whole of the UK to engage and represent the UK’s cultural diversity and creativity at high-profile cultural events.  Creative Economy analyses creative ecosystems and highlights emerging trends and areas of convergence and difference between creative economies around the world.  Arts Responds to Global Challenges celebrates the transformative power of arts and culture to change attitudes, support more equal societies and the protection and promotion of cultural expression, diversity and heritage at risk.

 

The Role

 

The Arts Manager will support the Head of Arts and will implement activities in country delivered through one or more of the Arts four global programmes: Culture Connects, Spotlights on Culture, Creative Economy and Arts Responds to Global Challenges.

You will work with a small team in country and manage sector partner and stakeholder relationships. They will also build relationships and work closely with their peers in region and across the global arts network, often collaborating on global programmes.

 

Accountabilities are, but not limited to:

Sector/subject expertise
•    Uses their own knowledge of the country’s arts and creative industries, intelligence and insight from other sector partners, to support the implementation of global arts programmes that meet the specific needs of the country while also providing value to UK arts and creative industry organisations.     •    Through ongoing relationships with Global arts colleagues, builds and maintains good understanding of UK arts and creative industry sector priorities.
•    Identifies opportunities for the UK Arts sector to work in and collaborate with peers in country.

Leadership & management •    Provides specialist input and design to help ensure activities under the Arts global programmes are relevant to the Arts and creative industry sectors in country.
•    Actively works across the matrix in the Arts network, collaborating with colleagues on programmes, while promoting equity, diversity and inclusion.
• Uses digital platforms and technological advancements to improve efficiency, impact and quality of activity design and delivery.

Strategy and/or planning •    Contributes to planning process for country arts portfolio within region.
•    Develop and nurtures internal relationships across Cultural Engagement to ensure strategic objectives are aligned, understood and achieved.
•    Considers the role of digital products, services and channels in optimising the impact and sustainability of the portfolio, working with regional marketing and digital colleagues.

Relationship & Stakeholders •    Maintains partner relationships relevant to the Arts, and wider cultural sectors, to maintain a strong understanding of relevant themes and issues in the arts and creative industries. Uses this insight to identify new opportunities and partnerships for the British Council, and build favourability for the UK.
•    Builds and maintains a broad, diverse and dynamic network of key creative and cultural sector representatives in country, including artists, creative professionals, creative hubs, arts organisations, arts advocacy groups, intermediary and sector bodies, etc.

Brand and market positioning  •    Promotes the diversity of the UK arts and creative industries sector in country.
•    Ensures British Council’s value proposition and support to the UK arts sector in country is clear and communicated.
•    Ensures that British Council’s reputation for quality and as a valued not-for-profit partner remains high and contributes to our organisational mission of building trust between the UK and other countries.

Programme management •    Works to ensure activities under the Arts global programmes are tailored to the specific needs of country, through collaboration with colleagues in globally dispersed programme teams.
•    Manages finances of small projects and activities in the Arts portfolio and will flag up issues promptly.
•    Manages issues with internal and external partners and stakeholders and escalates them when necessary.

 

Requirements of the role:

•    Good understanding of the arts and creative industries in country.
•    Experience of working in or with the arts and/or creative industries sector.
•    Managing projects (level 2) : project data. Examines project data and performance, reporting on progress and recommending corrective action as needed.
