Architectural Historian – Richard Grubb & Associates, Inc. (Wake Forest, North Carolina)
Richard Grubb & Associates, Inc. (RGA) is seeking an entry level Architectural Historian to join our North Carolina team of historians and archaeologists. This is an excellent opportunity for an early career professional to learn the cultural resources management industry from experienced practitioners and to work on a wide variety of projects.
This position is based out of our Wake Forest, North Carolina office. Remote work is a possibility and travel is required for site visits, research, and fieldwork. The successful candidate must be a strong writer and possess superior organizational skills. Candidates are well served by curiosity about the built environment and familiarity with architectural types and styles of the southeastern U.S. Candidates will ideally have a Master’s Degree in Anthropology, History, Architectural History, Historic Preservation, Folklore (or a closely related field). Candidates who are nearing completion of their degree are encouraged to apply as are non-traditional candidates. Experience meeting the Secretary of the Interior Professional Qualifications Standards is not required.
Responsibilities:
- Write both short and long form physical descriptions for a variety of historic resources, including buildings, structures, objects, landscapes, etc.
- Digital photography.
- Database entry.
- Manage survey data.
- Conduct primary and secondary source historical research and synthesize research into architecturally relevant background histories; analyze research results and contextualize historic resources within their relevant historical themes, geographical areas, and chronological periods.
- Prepare architectural survey forms and associated materials such as maps, site plans, and digital photographs.
Qualifications & Abilities:
- Master’s Degree in Anthropology, History, Architectural History, Historic Preservation, Folklore (or closely related field, or demonstrated equivalent experience, such as a Bachelor’s degree and relevant internship or work experience.
- Familiarity with the regional history and the cultural and built environment of the South and Mid-Atlantic.
- Strong writing skills.
- Organize large amounts survey data; knowledge of FilemakerPro, Microsoft Access, and GIS is desired but not required.
- Ability to work independently when needed; willingness to engage with professional mentors.
- Strong self-starter attitude with a keen attention to detail.
- Effective multi-tasking abilities while managing priorities and meeting project deadlines and budgets.
- Valid driver’s license.

This full-time position includes a competitive pay and benefits package. The base salary for this position is $41,600. Benefits include paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays; group medical, dental, and vision insurance; and a 401k plan with employer contribution.
