Full-Time Architect – $60K-$130K – ARCHI002110
Job Description
Salary range is $60k to $130k, with a midpoint of $95k. New hires typically receive between minimum and midpoint, however, we may go slightly higher based on experience, internal equity and market.
GENERAL PURPOSE:
Under general direction, the Architect provides guidance and technical oversight for the design and construction of transit facilities; gives detailed review of design solution and the deliverable during design phases, during construction inspections, and reviews and offers technical support to consultants; provides management and oversight of consultant provide professional services; and coordinates assigned activities with other divisions, programs, department/offices, and outside agencies.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The following duties are a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
• Inspects the construction facility for conformance to contract requirements and to ensure that both the design and construction of the project are meeting Agency goals and objectives; meets directly with the contractor to discuss issues, resolve problems, and drives issues forward with the construction management team.
• Assists in the preparation of answers to requests for information from the contractor and reviews contractor provided submittals.
• Identifies work items that should receive detailed monitoring for work quality and provides instructions where work requirements reside in the construction documents to field inspection staff; identifies other potential issues and develops approaches to prevent or minimize them; and meets directly with the contractor to discuss and resolve.
• Reviews design solutions to ensure that Agency goals and objectives will be met for the facility.
• Reviews deliverables from consultants to verify the constructability of the proposed solution and the technical comprehensiveness of the package.
• Reviews professional services of consultants for conformance to quality, schedule, and budget requirements during the design phase; provides design support during construction phase; and prepares design solutions for multiple ad hoc limited scope construction projects.
• Provides support to the department/division and others on matters as directed, and serves as staff on a variety of committees as requested.
• Prepares and presents staff reports and other necessary correspondence.
• Attends and participates in professional group meetings; maintains awareness of new trends and developments in the fields related to area of assignment; incorporates new developments as appropriate; ensures processes, policies and practices are interpreted and applied consistently and effectively; ensures accountability and compliance with all current and applicable state and federal laws, Agency policies and procedures, rules and regulations.
• Presents standards and project information to various internal and external stakeholder groups.
• Provides code interpretation and establishes agreements with jurisdictions relative to assigned projects.
• Champions and models Sound Transit’s core values and demonstrates values-based behaviors in everyday interactions across the agency.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
Bachelors Degree accredited in architectural studies, planning, engineering, or closely related field and four years of architectural design and production related experience including two years lead project management responsibility including oversight of professional services by consultants/outside staff, preferably in a transit or construction related environment; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Licenses or Certifications:
• Valid state driver’s license.
• Valid registration as a Professional Architect issued by the State of Washington.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
• Architectural design principles and practices.
• Principles and practices of landscape architecture and urban design.
• Building and zoning codes and regulations.
• Principles and practices of contract administration and understanding of contractual relationships for consultants and contractors.
• Principles and practices of the building and construction industry.
• Third party requirements.
• Principles and procedures of record keeping.
• Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations including the American with Disabilities Act.
• Project management techniques and principles.
• Techniques to work effectively under pressure, meet deadlines, and adjust to changing priorities.
• Principles of business letter writing and report preparation.
• English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
• Modern office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and statistical databases.
• Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other department staff, management, vendors, outside agencies, community groups and the general public.
• Interpreting and administering policies and procedures sufficient to administer, discuss, resolve, and explain them to staff and other constituencies.
• Interpreting and applying applicable federal, state, and local policies, laws, and regulations.
• Working effectively under pressure, meeting deadlines, and adjusting to changing priorities.
• Managing and/or overseeing a complex project or multiple smaller projects concurrently.
• Assuming project management duties for projects started by others and in a variety of stages in the project life cycle.
• Conducting research and analysis and providing appropriate recommendations based on findings.
• Researching, analyzing, and evaluating new service delivery methods and techniques.
• Developing and monitoring departmental and program/project operating budgets, costs, and schedules.
Physical Demands / Work Environment:
• Work is performed in a standard office environment.
• Subject to standing, walking, bending, reaching, stooping, and lifting of objects up to 25 pounds; may occasionally be exposed to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, physical harm, hazardous chemicals, and extreme noise when conducting site visits or when working in the field.
