Job Description

Position Title: Appalachian Conservation Corps 2024 Internship Opportunities 

Location: Virginia, Maryland, DC, Ohio 

 

Appalachian Conservation Corps:   

Our Individual Placement program works to connect young people to conservation service work across Appalachia and neighboring communities in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, DC, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. ACC is a program of Conservation Legacy, a nationwide network of conservation organizations. 

Individual Placements gain hands-on experience at their placement site, and ACC supports them through their term, and provides a variety of benefits to help them succeed in achieving their career goals. ACC welcomes national applicants, but also emphasizes the engagement of local individuals who represent the communities in which they serve.   

2024 Internships:  

We are currently recruiting for over 20 internships in Maryland, Virginia and D.C. with roles in Interpretation, Natural Resources, Digital Design and more! Position details and applications can be found on our website (www.appalachiancc.org/individualplacements) under Open Positions.  

Our internships range from 12 weeks to 50 weeks and include the following:  

Virginia 

  • Communications Liaison IP at Shenandoah National Park in Luray, VA – Serve as a liaison between the visual information department and the Shenandoah National Park Trust.  
  • Volunteer and Youth Programs IP at Shenandoah National Park in Luray, VA – Engage young people as current and future stewards of Shenandoah National Park. 
  • Cultural Steward IP at Captain John Smith National Historic Trail in Jamestown, VA – Learn about park management and implement your skills at a historic, native site. 
  • Buffers Assessment IP with Appalachian Conservation Corps in Mount Crawford, VA – Help ACC Watershed Corps assess sites and develop plans for riparian forest buffers. 

Maryland  

  • Interpretation IP at C&O Canal National Historical Park in Williamsport, MD – Provide visitor services and interpretive programming to park visitors.  
  • Digital Interpretation IP at C&O Canal National Historical Park in Williamsport, MD – Assist NPS staff in enhancing the park’s digital media. 
  • Visual Information IP with C&O Canal National Historical Park – Help create visual resources to share the history of the Canal. 
  • Resource Management and Maintenance IP at Monocacy National Battlefield in Frederick, MD – Work with park staff on maintenance and natural resources field projects.  
  • Resource Education and Visitor Services IP at Monocacy National Battlefield in Frederick, MD – Assist in preparation and programming for the park’s 160th battle anniversary.  
  • Summer Resource Management and Maintenance IP at Antietam National Battlefield in Sharpsburg, MD – Help NPS staff complete a wide variety of field projects this summer. 
  • Maintenance and Natural Resource Management IP at Antietam National Battlefield in Sharpsburg, MD – Help NPS staff complete a wide variety of field projects. 

D.C.  

  • Interpretation IP at C&O Canal National Historical Park in Potomac, MD – Provide visitor services and interpretive programming to park visitors. 
  • Summer Digital Design IP with Civil War Defenses of Washington in Washington, D.C. – Help create visual content for billboards, flyers, and the park’s website/ social media.  

Ohio  

  • Environmental Steward IP with Lakes Erie Islands in Put-In-Bay, OH – Advocate for and preserve the scenic and natural areas at a unique island area.

General Qualifications:  

To qualify, you must be between the ages of 18 and 30, and a US citizen that has received a high school diploma or GED. All offers of employment are conditional upon completion of an acceptable check of the National Sex Offender Public Registry and federal criminal background check. Must be eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award.
