OVERVIEW
Responsibilities for the US Healthcare Analyst role:
The Analyst will engage in primary and secondary research to inform the design and execution of Gates Ventures’ work related to identifying opportunities to improve our understanding of and identifying scalable pathways towards better value for spend in US Healthcare. This will include independent work as well as collaboration with partners and advisors, and require synthesis and communication across multiple mediums (e.g. websites, presentations, written briefs) to structure, execute, and report back on investment and/or grant progress. The analyst will also be responsible for strategic execution and relationship management with key program partners.
GV’s nascent US Healthcare program focuses on developing a “learning agenda” to identify and better understand the challenges that drive the high health care costs observed in the US, and (e.g., administrative burden or data challenges / interoperability limitations). Programmatic focus ranges from research grants across key topics of interest, design & evaluation of demonstration exercises / proof of concept pilots, and tracking the relevant evolving policy environments at state and federal levels.
Specifically, this Analyst will also be expected to scope and diligence potential investments, monitor progress of funded grantees, proactively monitor relevant policy & academic developments, and engage with key stakeholders to identify potential new opportunities.
Responsibilities will include:
- Oversee GV Due Diligence and Progress of Funded Efforts (50%): Working with GV teams, external consultants, and key advisors to shepherd proposals through the GV review process and manage progress reporting for funded investments.
- Research and analytical work (30%): Proactive scanning of the published literature, market reports, and policy announcements regarding domestic healthcare administrative burden and data environments and how they may inform investment decisions for existing and novel Gates Ventures initiatives. This may include attending conferences and events with thought leaders in the US healthcare space and proactive outreach to identify potential prospective applicants.
- Project and Knowledge Management (20%): Supporting the Associate Director, and Managing Director and working in close partnership co-funder counterparts, contribute to key meetings, reports and deliverables, track internal metrics regarding GV funding and operations.

QUALIFICATIONS
- 2 to 6+ years of professional experience. Ideally in fields such as venture capital, consulting, or other means of exposure providing familiarity with basic dynamics of the U.S. healthcare system through past work and/or educational background.
- Passion for investing, improving access to high value care, and health equity
- Outstanding analytical and quantitative skills with careful attention to detail
- Independent thinker comfortable expressing contrarian views and being challenged
- Clear and concise written and oral communication skills
- A willingness to embrace periodically intense work environment and non-traditional business hours to support network of stakeholders and portfolio needs
- Consistent intellectual curiosity and humility; necessary to get up to speed on projects and to contribute to future directions
