 Summary Position Statement

Under the general direction of the Exhibitions and A/V Manager, the A/V Experience Tech Manager will develop, construct, install and de-install, maintain, and repair a broad variety of Museum exhibitions, and support programs, events, and experiences that feature interactive and/or audio/visual components and creative content.  The Technical Manager will also provide the Museum with daily operational support as well as A/V support for Museum events and programs and support A/V work of multiple Museum departments.

 

Essential Functions

 Develops, designs, constructs, maintains and repairs audio/visual, and interactive exhibitions, and supports special events and programs, focusing on a wide range of subject matter, their environs, and special projects employing a wide range of materials, equipment, and technologies for permanent and rotating exhibitions

  • Proposes and applies creative ideas and solutions for content delivery via audio and visual means
  • Organizes and maintains AVI components
  • Makes recommendations for equipment purchase, system design, and facility utilization
  • Creates and modifies Audio/Visual/Interactive assets for delivery in the museum environment, through Web platforms, and via mobile devices
  • Plans and prepares technology for conducting and recording interviews, events, and performances; designs, edits, and delivers multimedia assets such as video and audio recordings
  • Assists other technicians and Museum departments in planning, developing, installing Audio/Visual and interactive elements
  • Serves as a core member of the exhibitions team, supporting installations and de-installations, removing artifacts, and salvaging and stowing re-usable materials and equipment
  • Documents and manages AVI inventory of equipment, supplies, and materials
  • Maintains workshop, shared areas, and storage areas in a clean, well-organized manner
  • Operates heavy equipment, i.e. forklift or man-lift; operates light equipment, i.e. saws, drills, hand, and electric tools
  • Works in a manner safe to the individual and other people follows safety rules and safe working practices and uses safety equipment as required
  • Acts as a lead for and oversees work of the Audio/Visual Exhibition Technicians

 

Non-Essential Functions

 Attends professional development opportunities to maintain knowledge and skill

  • Assists with museum programs and events; attend project meetings as needed
  • Assists individuals in the operation of audiovisual equipment
  • Provides training and instruction to the museum community as needed.
  • Answers inquiries concerning the use of AV equipment, including microphones, speakers, video screens, projectors, monitors, connecting wires and cables, and lighting
  • Works with AVI equipment companies as needed
  • Works collaboratively with all Museum staff and maintain effective communication regarding the needs, upkeep, and ongoing maintenance of the Discovery Center
  • Performs other related duties as required

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

 Knowledge of:

 Micro-controllers, and simple computers such as Raspberry Pi and Arduino.

  • Programming and development, including basic to mid-level competency with computer coding for instance C++, HTML, a Python, and Objective-C, Visual Studio Code, Unity, or Swift (for coding on iOS/ipads),
  • Materials, techniques, and equipment used in basic carpentry construction, mechanics, and electronics
  • Human-computer interaction (HCI) methods, techniques, and best practices
  • Sound technology, standard audio equipment, mixing boards.
  • Electrical principles and wiring; soldering; safety protocols for electrical systems

 

Ability to:

 Troubleshoot and resolve technical and mechanical issues

  • Train users that may have limited audio/visual experience
  • Occasionally work weekends, evenings, and holidays as necessary
  • Work independently, under pressure, in a fast-paced environment, prioritize multiple competing tasks and demands, and seek supervisory assistance as appropriate
  • Organize work processes and select work methods and procedures; set goals, monitor progress, provide clear documentation, and multi-task
  • Communicate clearly in written and oral exchanges
  • Assist museum visitors in the event of a fire or other emergency
  • Work in a multicultural environment

 

Qualifications

 High-school diploma or equivalent required (Undergraduate degree in a related field (e.g. sciences, design, computer technology) preferred)

  • Minimum of 2-3 years experience in museum work or related field
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, Internet navigation, and research
  • Three years experience working with computer-operated media systems
  • Additional experience in the areas listed above may be substituted for the required education
