About the Opportunity
826 Boston seeks mission-driven change-makers to join the 826 Boston AmeriCorps Fellowship for the 2023-2024 school year. This is an exciting opportunity to join a cohort of AmeriCorps members and play a key role in driving impact to serve more students in Boston Public Schools through 826 Boston’s innovative In-School and Writers’ Room programs.
Serving as the AmeriCorps Part-Time Bilingual In-School Program Tutoring Specialist as a 826 Boston AmeriCorps Fellow is a challenging, yet rewarding experience. Through your year of service, you will work with students to empower them to find their voices, tell their stories, and gain critical communication skills, while also supporting tutors and teachers as they meaningfully incorporate writing into curricula across all grades and content areas.
The AmeriCorps Part-Time Bilingual In-School Program Tutoring Specialist will serve 20 hours a week supporting one of 826 Boston’s partner sites within the Boston Public Schools.
Rafael Hernández School Two-Way Bilingual K-8 School (RHS) Site Schedule:
- Monday and Wednesday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, in-person service at RHS
- RHS Address: 61 School Street, Roxbury, MA 02119
- Friday, 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM, remote service
Margarita Muñiz Academy (MMA) Site Schedule:
- Tuesday and Thursday, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM, in-person service at MMA
- MMA Address: 20 Child Street, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130
- Friday, 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM, remote service
The 826 Boston AmeriCorps Fellowship is an 11-month service program beginning on Monday, August 14, 2023.

The 826 Boston AmeriCorps Fellowship program is dependent on a yearly funding award from the Corporation for National and Community Service.
Key Responsibilities and Functions
- Support students’ writing development through one-on-one writing conferences, small-group collaboration, and whole-class instruction leading writing workshops
- Serve as a writing tutor to students across a variety of subject areas and projects, including but not limited to: college application essays, personal narratives, history term papers, lab reports, and year-end portfolios
- Support Student Editorial Board for each publication project, ensuring students have the opportunity to inform book content, cover and interior design, and title selection
- Assist with In-School Program volunteer coordination, including managing email communication, support volunteers during tutoring sessions, and co-lead pre-brief and debrief conversations
In-School Additional Responsibilities
- Assist with data collection, analysis, and results-sharing associated with the In-School Program, including tracking student visits and hours, distributing student and teacher surveys, and participating in bi-annual team-wide reporting
- Collaborate with Boston Public Schools teachers across all disciplines to execute in-class writing projects that utilize 826 Boston tutors and in-house publication capabilities
- Support in-school publishing projects and book release parties
- Communicate project progress to staff supervisor and seek counsel when help is needed to execute goals
- Support school-organized student and family-focused events as needed, representing 826 Boston
Qualifications
- Proficiency in Spanish required
- High school diploma
- Experience teaching/tutoring writing to students grades K-8, or 9-12 in an urban setting
- Ability to adapt to various working and management styles
- Ability to participate in open communication to build community and foster team goals, including the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency in organizational, time management, project management, and resource management skills
- Proficiency and/or willingness to learn virtual platforms such as Microsoft Office, Zoom, and Google Suite
- Experience or interest in supporting college essays or elementary-age writing
- Classroom management preferred, but not required
- Familiarity with the Boston Public Schools system, particularly the schools in Roxbury and Jamaica Plain preferred, but not required
Compensation and Benefits
- Professional Development: As the AmeriCorps Part-Time Bilingual In-School Program Tutoring Specialist, you will build upon your personal strengths and develop transferable skills, such as teamwork, leadership, decision-making, project management and relationship development. Further, you will develop your knowledge of public school systems, school and community partnerships, and the day-to-day operations of a nonprofit organization. 826 Boston provides AmeriCorps members with formal onboarding in the summer at our tutoring center located at 3035 Washington Street in Roxbury, ongoing training throughout the year, and individualized coaching from direct supervisors.
- Living Stipend: AmeriCorps Part-Time Bilingual In-School Program Tutoring Specialist will receive a gross bi-weekly stipend of $494, totaling a minimum of $11,875 over the 11-month program.
- Education Award: As an AmeriCorps member, the Part-Time Bilingual In-School Program Tutoring Specialist qualifies for an Eli Segal Education Award for every successful year of service, which includes completing 900 hours of service, and completing the full duration of the 11-month program. The education award can be used to repay student loans or cover tuition costs for graduate studies at an accredited college or university and will amount to at least $3,447.50.

- Travel Stipend: $50/month travel stipend for months of active service
- Medical Coverage: AmeriCorps members have the opportunity to apply for the Corps Network Health Plan, but may decline it in favor of alternative coverage obtained through a parent, guardian, or spouse
