Essential Functions and Objectives:
Educator effectiveness is a key priority of DPS. LEAP (Leading Effective Academic Practice) incorporates multiple measures of effectiveness and aligns targeted support to growth needs identified by the system. This system is the cornerstone to which DPS aligns professional development, recruitment, retention and other teacher-focused HR strategies. The Peer Observer role provides practitioner voice while supporting deep understanding and quality implementation of LEAP components.
– Peer Observers support teacher growth and performance via learning cycles that include, but are not limited to, setting learning intentions based on choice and data (usually observation data and student data), classroom observations, alignment of observed behaviors to the Framework for Effective Teaching (FET), coaching and consulting to build teacher’s capacity as an instructional decision maker, and facilitating teacher reflection on the learning cycle. Peer Observers draw on all the components of LEAP in supporting educators.
– Peer Observers support building-based leaders’ capacity to support teachers through a variety of strategies including co-observations, content consultations, writing high-quality Classroom Observation Forms, and determining highest-leverage next steps. Peer Observers may also facilitate building-based observers and coaches through guided calibration sessions.
– Peer Observers design and facilitate a variety of LEAP related professional learning experiences as part of educators understanding, engaging with, and implementing the components of LEAP.
– In some instances, Peer Observers serve as collaborative partners to teachers and principals when performance interventions become part of the growth and performance picture; this might include supporting a teacher on a Performance Improvement Plan.
– Peer Observers are required to document the ongoing work as part of a systemic approach to sustained improvement and reporting.
Peer Observer salaries are set in the following manner:
– Current base teaching salary for internal hires; or salary on the DCTA salary schedule for external hires, up to ten years of service.
– Salary: See DCTA Teacher Salary Schedule at http://careers.dpsk12.org/teachercomp/compensation-your-first-year/
