Job Description

JOB TITLE: #1760 Museum Guide 

OPEN TO: This job is open to all applicants. 

LOCATION: History Center – 345 W Kellogg Blvd., St. Paul, MN 55102

SALARY: $15.76 hourly minimum 

STATUS & HOURS: Part-time, regular (approximately 728 annual hours) position. Approximately 14 hours per week. Schedules are based on museum hours of operation. Museum hours are Wednesday-Sunday. Must be available for weekend shifts on a regular basis. 

BENEFITS: Eligible to participate in a retirement program with employer contribution. Generous vacation and sick time accruals.

TRAINING: Required training for this position will take place on Monday, April 3rd from 9:00am-12:00pm; Thursday, April 6th from 3:00pm-8:00pm; and Saturday, April 8th from 10:00am-4:00pm. 

DESCRIPTION: This position exists to conduct educational programs that serve diverse audiences, provide customer service to guests of the History Center Museum, and assist in the daily operations of the museum. 

SUMMARY OF WORK: 1) Conduct interpretive programs within museum exhibits; and supports ongoing museum operations such as maintenance, safety, and cleaning; 2) Create a welcoming educational environment in the History Center exhibits by actively utilizing a variety of interpretive techniques and delivering excellent customer service; 3) Conduct and perform up to three specialized museum programs or lessons; 4) Study and master program and exhibit related historical materials; and 5) Conduct exhibit-based programs for school-aged audiences. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Demonstrated experience and ability to provide consistent, high quality customer service.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently. 
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and contribute positively in a team environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to listen to the public and be responsive to inquiries and comments.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and apply a wide variety of interpretive techniquess.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse public in a friendly and open manner, while conveying information or teaching. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse audience of varying cultural backgrounds, ages, and abilities. 
  • Flexibility to adjust to changes in schedule and assignments. 
  • Ability and flexibility to work a varied schedule. 
  • Available to work weekend shifts on a regular basis.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time, while giving tours or conducting programs.
  • Ability to bend, crouch, kneel, reach, push, and pull. 
  • Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 20 pounds. 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent. 
  • Experience working with children and/or adults in an educational environment.
  • Experience with teaching, acting, storytelling or musical performance abilities that can be used in interpretive programs. 
  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn about Minnesota history.
