STATUS & HOURS: Full-time, regular (approximately 2,088 annual hours) position.

DESCRIPTION: This position exists to play a key role in documenting, interpreting, and building increased access to and use of the MNHS and associated art collections related to the Minnesota State Capitol and other public spaces under MNHS’s purview. Collections include fine and decorative art, furniture, 3D objects including statuary, and other items. A core aspect of the position is working collaboratively with a broad range of MNHS colleagues and other stakeholders to embed Capitol and public art collections in the telling of history. These stakeholders include MNHS staff in Collections, Sites, Exhibits, Public Programs, and Government Relations; as well as government entities such as the Department of Administration and the Capitol Area Architectural and Planning Board, among others who consider the Capitol building an important place.
The Capitol and MNHS Sites Art Program Specialist develops and implements strategies that deepen the impact of state capitol and public art collections by fostering relationships and engagement opportunities within and outside of a large institution with widely varied constituencies. This position also serves as a key internal consultant for public art issues across the MNHS network; as administrative support for art-related initiatives at the Capitol; and as a partner with Development colleagues and the MNHS Leadership Team to further strategic priorities and the mission of the organization: transforming access, expanding authority and expertise, and creating a sustainable future for the use, growth, and stewardship of Capitol and public art collections.
SUMMARY OF WORK: 1) Serve as MNHS’s primary liaison regarding Minnesota State Capitol collections and art, as well as for art at all MNHS sites; 2) Work collaboratively with colleagues across MNHS and its networks to promote access to and engagement with MNHS collections at the Capitol and public art under MNHS purview; 3) Contribute to MNHS’s commitment to sharing Minnesota history through community engagement and partnerships; and 4) Contributing to organizational strategic priorities and initiatives through active participation in leadership, committee, and other opportunities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree plus four years experience in a museum or library field; OR advanced degree in Museum Studies, Public History, Art History, the Humanities, or related field, plus three years experience in a museum or library field or equivalent.
- Excellent communication and diplomacy skills.
- Three years of curatorial, collections, and/or public history/art related experience.
- Knowledge of art and exhibit practices, including art selection, display, and exhibit installation.
- Demonstrated experience building and maintaining collaborative relationships, as well as navigating complex situations with multiple and competing audiences and priorities.
- Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of Minnesota history and culture.
- Excellent organizational skills, including experience with budget oversight and advanced skills with database creation and management.
- Ability to take initiative, to work independently and as a member of a team, and be self-motivated.
- Ability to provide work direction to colleagues, interns, and volunteers.
- Ability to lead projects that incorporate multiple stakeholders.
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment that embraces diverse viewpoints and experiences.
- Ability and willingness to travel.
- Valid driver’s license.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Advanced degree in Museum studies, Library and Information Studies, literary studies, history, or related fields.
- Demonstrated experience in project management.
- Active involvement in a professional association.
